Wind strength / direction plays a factor of course (for the record, on March 1st wind was from the south east), and also localised 'eddies', etc, are often at play. For instance, on night of 27th De Ruyter, after being hit by torp, drifted some distance (don't have figures at hand) south west before sinking.
