Response to Your 'assumptions' re my 'position' are correct

Though do let the record show that she was nominally part of the escort for Haguro and Nachi. Her TROM indicates that from late January to February 25, 1942, she escorted those two CAs from Davao eventually to Makassar, which time span included three invasions (of Ambon, Makassar, and Timor). Both she and sister Inazuma, another large-numbers rescuer, do seem to be most unlikely candidates. Why do you exclude Akebono, not apparently involved in rescuing allied survivors after Second Java Sea? Perhaps because with four DDs taking the survivors to Makassar—likely not at the same time—the CAs did need some A/S protection close at hand and Akebono could not be spared?

At the risk of plowing old ground, those five DDs associated with the two heavy cruiser groups seem to have been the closest to Augustina, if the IJN aircraft that overflew the tanker were attacking Pope somewhere over the horizon (and the time of day fits that eventuality). IF we let all five DDs off the hook, that leaves but two general possibilities: (i) a DD or other escort type from the Eastern Java invasion force, e.g., Hatsukaze or Harusame, OR (ii) a DD or other escort type detached early enough from the Western Java invasion force that she missed the battle of Sunda Strait and was directed by wireless to Augustina, based on the reports from the aircraft that spotted the tanker. We know that Harukaze and Hatakaze were both present at Sunda Strait and likely too distant. Minesweeper W-5 is not so far accounted for, but at that stage of the game in the still-dangerous Java Sea, the detaching of so small a fleet unit seems unlikely. [Note that I’ve restricted my suggestions to romaji H destroyers, for which restriction there may exist no justification whatsoever.]

Are we left essentially with fleet escorts from the Eastern Java invasion force or are we back at Square One??
