Response to Vessels: Tegelberg, Toba, Soedoe

I travelled from Greenick in Scotland to Bombay on the Tegelberg.. On the day of our arrival a message was made on the tannoy that the first atomic bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima. We were accommodated on Deck G which, I believe, had been a hold. There were no portholes. Air was supposed to come down a canvas tube suspended from the boat deck and there were a few air vents round the walls. The hold was filled by tables and benches leaving no free space . At a fixed hour in the evening we slung our hammocks from hooks. The place stank of perspiration. We washed in scalding seawater showers using seawater soap that was useless.
