Response to CHAUMONT the Ugly Chitlin

 

There were apparently a good number of reasons why the *USS Henderson*(AP-1) was such a "happy" ship when compared to the other old APs; her being primarily a purpose-built vessel with a lot of thinking going into the design and build, and evidently no expense spared.

I was surprised to learn that she was the first large vessel ever to be fitted with a gyro-stabilising system and how effective it was, limiting roll to no more than a 3 degree list in the roughest seas that she encountered. Apart from economy and comfort, it also provided stability for her director-controlled 8 x 5" guns.
