      Thanks for the link, Jim.
Page 14 of FY-1938 has part of what I've been looking for:
Scouting Squadron (for service aboard cruisers) names were changed on 1 July 1937 to Cruiser Scouting Squadrons, corresponding to the Cruiser Divisions that they were assigned to as follows:

      Crudiv Two: VS-5 renamed VCS-2
      Crudiv Three: VS-6 renamed VCS-3
      Crudiv Four: VS-9 renamed VCS-4
      Crudiv Five: VS-10 renamed VCS-5
      Crudiv Six: VS-11 renamed VCS-6
      Crudiv Seven: VS-12 renamed VCS-7
      Crudiv Eight: VS-16 renamed VCS-8

At the same time squadron names aboard carriers were also changed and assigned 1x fighter squadron (VF), 1x bombing squadron (VB), 1x scouting squadron (VS), and 1 x torpedo squadron (VT).

      Regards,

      Jacques
