Police apology over IRA murder of mother of 10

The police have apologised for failing to carry out a proper investigation into the murder of a mother of 10, who was abducted and killed by the IRA almost 34 years ago.
It took the Royal Ulster Constabulary more than 20 years to examine the killing of Jean McConville, one of the most high-profile of the thousands of victims of the Troubles, a report by the Police Ombudsman disclosed yesterday.
Mrs McConville's children were split up and taken into care after she went missing in December 1972. No one has been convicted of her killing and her body was not found until 2003 when it turned up on Shelling Beach in Co Louth in the Irish Republic. She had been shot in the head. |
