The Foundation


The Cornelsen Culture Foundation is dedicated to architectural preservation in the broadest possible sense. The Foundation donates around € 750 000 annually for the upkeep and restoration of culturally and historically significant buildings and works of art in Berlin and Brandenburg. Furthermore, the Foundation sponsors the acquisition of appropriate interior decoration and fittings, as well as paintings suitable to the architecture in question. The capital available to the Foundation has already been fully earmarked for a number of projects over the next few years.


The Foundation was founded in 1996 by Ruth Cornelsen to mark the golden jubilee of the Cornelsen Publishing Group for educational media and to honour the lifetime's work of her deceased husband, Franz Cornelsen. As a reward for her commitment, the German National Committee for Historical Preservation awarded Ruth Cornelsen the German Prize for Historical Preservation, the "Silver Hemisphere". She was furthermore awarded the Order of Distinguished Services by the state of Berlin.


After the first 5 years of operation, the Cornelsen Culture Foundation can already be proud of its achievements. Examples of these achievements include the restoration of Caputh Palace, the Max Liebermann Villa, the Albert Einstein Haus and of the Alexandra Loggia, and the recreation of the hand-painted wall coverings in Paretz Palace. The Cornelsen Culture Foundation, in its status as a charitable foundation, is a member of the Association of German Scientific Foundations.
