Mike McKay scores on a deflection. 3-0 Luckies late in the first. Luckies seem to really be pouring it on.

Nathan Goodjohnson with the Braves goal. Ophus with the 3rd goal for Houston, not McKay, Ophus with the fourth, Blair Dinelle the 5th and John Marren the 6th Luckies goal. Shots 23-23. Konkin tosses for unsportsmanlike.

Slaney and Goodjohnson drop the mits. Straight to the ice apparantly. Things starting to get heated.

surprises me, I figured this would be a game. Is Houston that good, or are the braves that bad?

Luckies looked good for first game had more intensity and looked like they are a faster team than they were last year. Also looked like they have added a few youngsters. Luckies look like they still have a solid core of those old guys that are old and fat as we always hear. Note: no Noah Bell last night and heard father time may have hung'em up. If this is true it means two less slashing penalties a game. The Braves looked good early but got into some penalty trouble that was costly. Braves still will be a tough team to play this year so no teams in this league should think they are the new 100 mile house beers. Hart had an off night and some soft shots found a way through traffic yet the luckies as always found a way to mess up some sure goals as well. Big Dave didn't seem to be on the ice a whole lot and was tossed on a questionable hit from behind. Brother steve didn't have the wheels of a few years back but still looked very strong and dominant with the puck at times. A few nice pick-ups for the Braves out of Fraser Lake. Over all the braves look a lot bigger {possibly the darth vader jerseys} and maybe have a deeper line up than the last time they iced a team in the CIHL. This could be a great rivalry again.

Luckies Good, Braves will get better...

The luckies did look good on Saturday, but there is definitely work to do. and I would suggest that they had better get wins on the Braves now because as the season goes on that is going to be a pretty good team out of BL, and it wont be easy 7-1 wins later in the season. The Luckies I think have improved their speed, and some have worked on their conditiong over the summer. Kenzle was solid in the season opener, and were it not for him it could have been a different story that first 5-10 minutes of the game.
Dave Wilejto's penalty I am pretty sure was not intentional, and was merely a case of a big man checking a small speedy forward who turned into the boards at the last second (ie. Hewitson). The way hockey is being called these days I believe the right call was made, it is unfortunate because it was definitely not malicious...now had that been on a Steelhead a season long suspension, a $500 fine, and blow to Dave's head with a shovel would probably be being lobbied for at the league office at this point...It seems from the action this weekend that parity may be arriving in the CIHL, a few weaker teams still, but every team seems to have improved (except maybe Terrace, and we will see what Omenica has this weekend).
