Intesting topic. I will take a minute to post. The 3800 seat Encana Event Center has been political controversy since it was proposed, referendumed, underbudgetted, & financial burden to our tax payers. After all that we have this great place to swim, riding arena, & watch top concerts. The Hockey surface is the third ice surface in DC available at $200.00/hr & $140.00 for MH. Global/Spectrum Entertainment have a contract that states the City of Dawson Creek provides an "Anchor Tenant". The BCJHL & AJHA turned down our bids to start or Relocate a Franchise to DC. The application to join the North American Hockey League also came with blocks by BCAHA & CAHA stepped in & found a way to sanction. Now we got a team at the cost of 200,000 for the new Franchise. It will be turned over to a non profit society to operate at a proposed budget of $1,300,000.00. The City made the again controversial commitment of 250,000/year subsidisation for three years. This is what they feel will be the deficit based on 1,200 fans per game & flying around North America. The level of competition is compared to the BCJ or AJ by some or lower. The level of entertainment will have to be proven? The operational budget to be proven? The opportunity for players to make this team from our area to be proven?
As for the Sr & Jr Canucks, it is already tough with the Economic downturn to meet our 60,000-80,000 budgets out of the community. The Jr B hockey is not bad for local boys averaging 300 fans. The Sr Canucks were not ever considered an anchor tenant for the Encana, but we have expros, excollage, & exJr A players offering a high level of hockey this year as well as a very competitive division with FSJ, GP, Hythe. The average atendance 400. The future to be proven?
