This was a fantastic game to watch. The first and second were pretty back and forth, with both teams coming to play. The third saw Smithers mount an assault. It didn't seem to matter who they threw out there, they were all over the Rampage in the final frame. For a more than 19 minutes, it looked like the Rampage were going to be able to hold on. That final mintue was frantic as Smithers was relentless in their attack and Ian Smith was able to bang in a rebound with 6.8 to go.
Not really sure about the whole OT thing, since every other CIHL game I've watched has gone straight to the shootout. This one saw five minutes of 4-on-4 action. It seemed like four and half of those mintues were played in the Rupert end. Smithers wasn't able to solve Rupert keeper Dan Lorette and the game found eventually found it's way to the Shootout. Rupert was able to end it quick with goals by Captain Colt and Chris Brlecic. Even with smaller crowd, the Jim was rocking. It was almost deafening as Rupert celibrated the win.
It's hard to pick a Smithers player that stood out. At times, they looked scary good, top to bottom in this one. As for Rupert one of the new faces, JT Ward stood out in this game, and looks to be a solid addition on the blueline. His night however, was not good enough for the first star as that has to be reserved for goalie Dan Lorette. Lorette had a whale of a game and was a big reason that Rupert survived the last game onslaught.
A couple of big games for Rupert this weeekned, hopefully will give them all sorts of confidence leading into the season. Also, big thanks to both Smithers and Kitimat for coming down this weekend. Great way for us fans to start the year.

Congrats to the Rampage for winning the Northern Challenge Cup. We bought that cup at the end of our first season, after we competed in the Coy Cup in Trail -- getting bounced in the semi by Powell River, who lost in the finals to the Trail Smoke Eaters, who got the bye.
We invited Trail up the following fall for a long weekend and held the first challenge cup competition -- best of two, total goals to make scoring important. The Cupt was won by Trail in the second game. Demons won the first... everybody had a great time -- and I hope everybody had a good time in Rupert. I missed just being along and so did Hewey, although we watched the Leafs get shredded by Buffalo... I think he might frather have been in PR, on the ice.
The original idea behind the Northern Challene Cup was to add interest to exhibition games...Demons have won it three or four times, Trail and Smithers once and now Rupert.
I hope we can keep the trophy in competition in the north -- its a "Cheapie" but it does add incentive and with the tough times here, it's needed. Congrats too on the great turnouts...
Demons went down in both games, and while I can't say I expected that, we knew we would be seeing stronger teams from Smithers and the Rampage. Itèll be a longer season for the Ice Demons this year, but donèt be counting us out...we were not full strength in Rupert, althouigh I expect neither were the Steelheads...
See you guys from Rupert on Oct. 2...
