Not to take anything away from what the Steelheads have done this season, and you hate to punish them for making the best of a great situation but....
6 games against Omineca, 2 games against Hazelton Which have a combined losing record of 3-28-0,
How much stock can we put into the Steelheads 12-2 record so far and are they the team to beat in the East?

I think this is a valid question. The answer is definitely YES, the Steelheads are for real. The history of this team suggests that they are for real. They're coming off 12-4 and 13-3 seasons the past two years, which says they have been good over the course of the last three seasons and that's a large enough sample size to show without a doubt they are a very good team and a real contender.
Having said that, it's also legitimate to wonder just how good they are. You can a make an argument that they really haven't been tested all season by a legitimate team. Kitimat was possibly playing their worst hockey ever when they went down to Smithers early in the season and Houston was with a midget aged goaltender when they beat them twice. The reality they haven't been tested in part because they haven't faced a team ready to compete at a high level and because they are actually a real good hockey team.
I think going into this week has to be considered a real measuring stick weekend for them facing the defending champs with something still on the line. Both teams likely view each other as someone they will have to beat to get to the coy and this will be a nice little preview to that should these teams survive what will be tough first round opponents in Houston and Burns Lake.
Smithers is for real.... just how real? we are about to find out.
