The Lac la Hache Tomahawks experienced their inaugural Central Interior Hockey League win on Oct. 16, striking down the Hazelton Wolverines, 12-4 in front of a large hometown crowd at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena.

Tomahawks Robin Gilbert lit up the scoreboard five times and Dervy Johnny scored a hat trick. Also making contributions were Alec Dedrick, Anthony Robbins, Jeremy Zelt and Ryan Minnabarriet. Coach Al Navrot says he was especially impressed with Gilbert's performance. "He has a lot of character, and in a clutch situation, you can really depend on him. He's a leader." He adds Gilbert, along with Ryan and Kyle Minnabarriet, Kristopher Billy and Dedrich all add depth and skill to the team.

The Tomahawks also played a home game on Oct. 15, losing 4-2 in a closely fought match with Quesnel Kangaroos. David Archie potted the first Tomahawk goal, with assists from R. Minnabarriet and Gilbert, early in the second period, tying it at one goal apiece.

Near the end of the third period, R. Minnabarriet narrowed a 3-1 gap with a goal assisted by Gilbert and K. Minnabarriet, but Kangaroos Alessio Tomassetti found his way past Tomahawks goalie William Sellars with scarcely a minute left on the clock. "We were in the game and played well enough to win," says Navrot. "Willy Sellars was great in both games and he's definitely going to be part of our team backbone."

The coach also sees his defence as being a great asset. "We're not going to be a pushover team, physically. We've got a big defence, and the guys know they're there."

The Tomahawks play again on Oct. 29 in Vanderhoof and Oct. 30 in Quesnel. Their next home game is Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. with the Williams Lake Stampeders.
