The Smithers Steelheads hit the ice at full speed in a rare Friday night home game last weekend, facing local rivals the Hazelton Wolverines at the Smithers Civic Centre Arena.
The Steelheads had an undefeated record on the line, with six wins and no losses up to Friday night, and they played like they intended to continue the winning streak. By the end of 60 minutes of hockey, they’d expanded the streak to a 7-0 record, after beating the Wolverines 6-1.
Hazelton goalie Keano Wilson was punished between the posts; although the Steelheads scored six goals, Wilson stopped an impressive 65 shots during his hour in the net.
The Quesnel Kangaroos had been the only other team in the CIHL to boast an undefeated season until last weekend, when they travelled to the coast with a 7-0 record. On Saturday, the ‘Roos lost 6-5 in a shootout to the Prince Rupert Rampage, but redeemed themselves on Sunday, beating the Kitimat Ice Demons 4-3 in yet another shootout.
The Steelheads will be in Hazelton on Friday night. The next home games will be Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. against the Prince Rupert Rampage, and Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. against the Kitimat Ice Demons.
