Kitimat Ice Demons defeat Quesnel 4-0.March 15 2012 at 12:48 AM No score for this post | kitimatfan (Login kitimatfan) from IP address 173.180.158.142 |
| The Ice Demons won their second game of the Coy Cup with a rough, but impressive 4-0 win over the Quesnel Kangaroos -- highlighted by Jamie Moran's second shut out in a row, and a three-goal performance by Nick Markowsky. The first hat-trick of the Coy Cup 2012, was accompanied by a second goal for Blaine Markwart in the third period, again to cement the win.
This was Demons best game since January and showed that the defending champions will remain a force in the Coy Cup despite a less than glittering season.
Markowski scored twice in the second period, at 3.55 (Jeremy Brady, Jeff Baker) and at 10.28 from Jeff Mildenberger, who dangled in the Quesnel defensive zone, while the remainder of the line changed. Markowsky, coming on ice blasted a low shot past Quesnel starter Ryan Manderson.
Markowski hit the sheet again at 4.58 of the third, assisted by Ian Coleman and Dave Venman and Markwart finished the scoring three minutes later, blasting home a side pass from Terry Whelan, after Brent Mailloux, who earned an assist also, had put the puck off the post.
For the remainder of the game, as it had been throughout, Quesnel showed their 600 plus minutes in penalties in the regular CIHL season were fully earned...looking tired and out-skated as they took eight minors in the game and then distinguished themselves by taking a major for charging the goaltender and two game misconducts which will shorten their bench as they face Williams Lake in the final round robin game tomorrow...
Childish and injurious to both themselves and the Demons.
Their starting goaltender, Ryan Manderson was escorted off the ice by first aiders after Dave Dollak flattened him in his own net trying to stop a cross goal Demons shot by Terry Whelan.
Waylon L'Heureux tried to make up for it at the other end by smashing into Jamie Moran, but was quickly ejected. Captain Dan Kirkham got a misconduct as well as Nick Patchett.
It was hard to tell what for as refs and linesmen moved in quickly conferred and got the game over before more mayhem. Sorry, Kangaroos, that stuff won't get the "roos name on a Coy Cup this year.
Demons took four minors and Kyle Boudreault a two and a game for a hit fro behind about ahlf-way through the game that was dominated by the Demons.
Shots in the game were Ice Demons 44 - Kangaroos 26.
The Kangaroos will need to listen to more mature heads before facing the Stampeders and might be able to play some hockey...???? |

Pappa I think you need to widen your gaze on the entire game and not just your demons. Hockey is a ruff game and emotions flare. Our team plays with alot of heart and we wear our hearts on our sleves. You can expect another physical affair tomorrow just hopefully it will be a different outcome, the winner Of tomorrow goes on to the semi's. Hopefully your boys can bandaid up your boo boo's and be able to take on the stealheads. |

I'm part of the organizing committee -- I do all of this 'cos I like it - but sometimes I have to wear my emotions of my sleeve and tell it as I see it... Six hundred PIMS plus in the regular season, 50 plus minutes total last night when the other team gets five minors -- 18 minutes (almost a period) shorthanded against the Steelies... time for either some coach control or some remembrance that everybody goes to work -- this ain't the NHL and you are representing your community at a provincial championship. The proud history that you have to live up to if you wear the jersey is a responsibility also.... |

You know Kitimat fan I see the homer attitude doesn't go very far in Kitimat I'm pretty sure I was watching the same game as you last night. There no mention of your players brutal check from behind last night no mention of your player that but tended one of our players in the face no mention of one of your players trying to use one of our guys' head as a football oh and the fact that all of those with the exception of the check from behind didn't get a penalty. Dave didn't run our goalie over he was tangled up with one of your guys it was an unfortunate play. It also doesn't help when your organizing committee puts in the program that we set new records for penalty minutes I mean why don't you just come down to our room and paint a target on our backs. One of your team reps even came down the hall at the end of the game and agreed that the reding was horrible and that he most likely won't ref another game. We aren't blaming the refs we can't win a game if we can't score and ya some of our guys lost their composure last night but don't come on here and call players out like you did we can be better we will be better. |

If you come out of a league with the highest penalty minutes and the other three teams from your league are in the tournament.... then they pretty much know what to expect when they play you guys. So they are going to meet fire with fire... your team plays on the edge... the other teams know you do...the Refs certainly know you do... they are waiting for it, what do you think they are all going to roll over and be intimidated. You guys are facing three championship teams so that isn't going to happen, they've been there before and can give as good as they get... you can't blame anyone for your reputation except youself...
Anyway after all that, the game is called hockey... and the last time I checked the only stat at the end of the night that matters is the score... and so far... the score in the coy cup speaks volumes... the question you need an answer to is; do you understand what the score is telling you? |

Yes ,there are 2 sides to every story. You are correct on some of the incidents against your players Nubbsy, they tend to get over looked by the faithful. But cihlpower is correct, you guys have made your bed now you must sleep in it.Frustration happens in games that get out of hand and alot of teams are guilty of that. It will be interesting at the end of game 1 tonite ,when 1 team will be on their way home.Fireworks?? lets hope cooler heads will prevail.
As far as your comments about the ref Nubbsy. He is probably the best one here, reffed the Coy final last year, will be flying south after the coy to ref some BCHL playoff games. I would bet he will be doing Sat. final here and pretty sure he will be on the ice again tonite. Did he miss some calls? He would probably tell you himself ,it's pretty tough to see everything out there.Watched any NHL games, i haven't seen too many perfectly called ones and thats with 2 reffs out there.

...they got paid. Their motto was play every play the same way, you can't get called on 'em all. They earned the nickname Broadway Bullies.
Last night your guys were in the box in 50 seconds...a minute 10 secs in against Smithers.
The crap at the benches on changes was started by Quesnel -- so don't expect other hockey players won't respond.
It's also the quality of the penalties -- very few hooks and trips and lots of charges, x-checks, slashes, roughing after whistle and a bunch of game ejections when there's no time left. You want to show us you want to play hockey -- tonight's your chance -- you can still get to the semis with a win tonight and the finals with a win tomorrow and the Cup with a win Saturday.
But I guarantee you can't do it shorthanded half the game.

I get a kick out of these threads that pit loyal fan against loyal fan. It seems that nobody ever sees the game the way the other one does, surprise surprise!! Things will never change, nobody likes to lose and the referee never makes ALL the right calls, the point being it all comes around in the wash. You might as well plan on having to face some referee adversity every game because its going to happen to every team. The good teams play through it and win, the other teams don`t and usually end up on the losing end.
Kitimat got tossed early in the playoffs and so far have bounced back with hard work and focus. I think we`ve stepped up our physical play to match the intensity of the Coy and as I said in another post our players have accepted the role their coaches have given them putting the team first. If there is a lesson to be learned its just that and once again no surprise that its built off our winning tradition with the hardware to prove it.
Football has armchair quarterbacks, vehicles have back seat drivers and hockey has its "table hockey experts!" You`ve got to love it especially when you consider that the people writing the posts have either never played the game or been away from the competition so long that "Tuk" blades and "composite sticks" are space age compared to their old gear.
Chill out boys, enjoy the competition, the best team will find a way to win. |

Dunno about Nubbsy -- but it's been many years since I have been on the ice ... but I did play rec and commercial hockey in the UK, New Brunswick and Brampton -- so I know something of what I speak. My current skates might make the Hall, straight tube blade CCMs - kangaroo (!!) skin Super Tacks circa late 70s. Had them sharpened once for a "Skate with the Demons" stint as Santa Claus - only time this new century!
Bought my son Hewey a silver aluminum Gretzky in Edmonton about 1985 when he was still playing minor hockey - he used it at Powell River when Mike Step's bantams from Kitimat won the provincial AA championship in '94 ... and watched the price go up on gear to aluminum shafts, then the molded sticks, spandex underwear. Proud to say I've still got an autographed plain wood stick, with a Canadian Tire $4.95 price sticker on it, as well as some great names, Lafleur, Shutt, Anderson, Gretzky, Tiger Williams, Sittler, Johnny Bower ... some others I can't remember or read even.
Hewey hasn't nicked that one yet. It's well hidden.
But I've also been reporting and writing on hockey since 1955 - when I covered pro Scottish league hockey in Ayr, Scotland -- rules then were you needed to have five local yokels to suit up along with the Canadian imports -- who were likely all semi-pro and ECHL or AHL level guys. I could skate fast, but was a lousy stick handler. Them as can, do, them as can't - teach!
Anyway, just agreeing -- we never lose the enjoyment of the sport, playing or watching and it sucks, as the kids say, when your team loses even one.

Last time I laced up was jan 15 th against lac la hache when I suffered a broken knee on a knee on knee collision. I know Our boys can get emotional and even though we lost last night I hope we showed everyone that we can play without taking penalties I think we only took 3 last night. Just for your knowledge I am number 3 from the Roos and not a fan but a player |

I agree with steely, you had the chances and couldn't get the bounces... good come back when you guys were down by 3... most teams would have quit but you guys battled til the last minute.... and stayed out of the box, I was standing behind your bench when your coach was tossed and still can't figure out what the coach said to set off the ref.. I could see he was questioning the goalie interference call.. but it didn't look like he deserved to be tossed....
