The Kelowna Sparta are 1-0-0 after beating the 2016 Coy Cup runner-up in the tournament’s opening game at Takhini Arena last night.

Kelowna beat the Terrace River Kings 3-2 with only 11 players and two goalies. The remaining members of the team are expected to arrive ahead of Thursday’s late match-up between the Sparta and host Whitehorse Huskies.

The game was scoreless after 20 minutes of play, but by the end of the second period, Kelowna was up 2-1.

In the third period, Terrace pushed for the win, but a late goal from the Sparta ensured the win.

Sparta goals came from Shawn Muller, Sasha Golin and Layne Stopanski, with assists coming from Aaron Buat, Matt Elia, Mueller, Trent Redschlag and Kevin Walrod.

River Kings goals went to Brett Downie and Austin Legros (short-handed), while assists were given to Tristan Murray and Luke Gordon.

Next up, Kelowna faces the North Island Capitals at 4 p.m. tonight. It will be the first meeting for the two teams.

The River Kings take on host Huskies in the late game at 7 p.m. The last time these two teams met was in the Coy Cup playoffs in Terrace last year. The River Kings won 6-3.
