Secondly, we want to let you know that the decision to post the photos on the site was not taken lightly. While we do understand that these photos may be offensive to some viewers, we also realize that there is a far larger number of people who wish to make their own decisions to view such material, rather than acquiesce to what a publisher or institution deems inappropriate.
Much like as is the case with the music recording industry, we believe that questionable materials should be labeled as such so that innocent viewers will not happen upon them by accident. We think that by placing the photos behind the "graphic warning" and behind protective html encoding, we can come to a balance between ethical journalism and providing a desired service to our visitors. With proper safeguards in place, the decision whether to view or not to view such materials can be made by the informed viewer rather than by a publisher.
