Alpha Recon held it's 2012 reunion in Reno, Nevada on May 2nd-6th at the Atlantis Hotel. Thirty-one Alpha Recon members attended this reunion along with twenty-nine spouses / family members. Also in attendance were the widows of Dale Sare, "Sgt. Jack" Giacalone and Larry Richards as well as the sister of Sam Sharp (KIA on the Breaker patrol in 1967). The Reno location helped draw a number of West Coast members, several whom had not attended a reunion in almost twenty years as well as several members who attended their first reunion.

Wednesday, May 2nd was a travel day as well as registration day for most attendees. The Hospitality room was put to good use well past midnight as many members renewed old friendships. Thursday was a golf day for some of the members as others enjoyed an extended breakfast buffet at the Atlantis hotel. Quite a few members and family members also tried their luck at the slot machines and gambling tables. Last we heard, the "House" faired much better than most of our group. In the afternoon, about 40 members and families boarded the chartered bus for a trip to Lake Tahoe for a dinner dance cruise on the lake. The weather was quite cool and we observed quite a bit of snow on the mountains that ringed the lake. The dinner cruise on the paddle-wheeler was delayed when one of our members, Harry Presley, had to be med-evaced due to an a medical problem.

Friday, May 4th was an open day which allowed for more golf as well as visiting some of the sights in the Reno area. For some reason, no one seemed interested in visiting the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare facility about 90 miles from Reno. No one wanted to climb any more mountains!

Saturday, May 5th started with the Company's business meeting. The important items discussed at this meeting were:

Jeff Savelkoul read the minutes of the Washington, D.C meeting from November, 2010 and the minutes were approved as submitted.

Don Schwinn updated the members on the current treasurers report.

George Neville informed the members that Alpha Recon had obtained it's own tax exempt status from the IRS. This action had been approved by the members at the Washington, D.C. meeting. This action will require Alpha Recon to submit an annual reports to the IRS. Members expressed their gratitude to George and Don Schwinn for their work to accomplish this objective.

The officers were re-elected for another term with the exception that the new Sgt of Arms is now Clarence Powell.

The members discussed in detail the site and timing of the next Company reunion. After much discussion, the members agreed to hold the next reunion in New Orleans in November, 2013. Ray Raymond will be the reunion chair and will be investigating how we can attend one of the Marine Corps Birthday Balls that are held in the New Orleans area. Many members fondly remembered the Marine Corps Ball we attended in New Orleans in 2000.
George Neville and Ray Raymond encouraged members to attend the Battalion reunion in Williamsburg, VA during September 2012.

There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was duly adjourned.

During the evening of May 5th, our members and guests met in one of the hotel's ballrooms for a banquet. This event started with a group of bag pipers playing a medley of tunes, including the Marine Corps Hymn. Next, the colors were presented by an Nevada Air National Guard color guard unit (no USMC unit was available).

John Hlavac gave a wonderful benediction. During the closing of the opening ceremonies George Neville presented a rose to Ann Giacolone, wife of Sgt Jack who passed away February 2011, Carol Sare wife of Dale Sare who passed in July 2008, and Janet Calder, sister of Sam Sharp, who was Killed In Action May 1967 while serving with Team Breaker

Lastly, Ray Raymond read two Proclamations of Recognition presented to Alpha Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion. One from the Governor of Nevada and one from the Mayor of Reno. Ray and Don Schwinn then distributed copies to all members. The banquet and reunion concluded with everyone looking forward to the next reunion and wishing all a safe trip home on Sunday.
