Response to X- and Y-Axis plus GND ?

The resistance is directly proportional to the position however they are all kind of connected internally to the same resistive element. You have to power one axis ie +5v to X+ and 0V to X- to get the voltage gradient and the X position then taken from the Y wire or similar so some cunning has to be applied to use them.

Stuff like the ipad and other modern PDAs use a capacitive touch screen which IS hideously more complex.
