I was tightening the cable up more and more. When it was more or less on the limit of the adjusters, I'd only have to pull the lever in a bit for the clutch to slip. I figured that maybe it was time to throw in some new plates.
So then I took the clutch apart (destroying one of the posts on the pressure plate, oops) and found the plates to be serviceable thickness and the springs exactly the right length.
Could it just be old oil then? I mean, I really thought that it was new clutch time because gear shifts were becoming less and less smooth. However, whilst I had it in mind that I needed to do a little overhaul anyway (and with the oil drain plug being seized up), I had also put off an oil change for ages, so the oil really was quite old by the time I drained it yesterday.
