Response to i thought you can only turn iron into a electromagnet
No idea what sort of metal it's made out of but it doesn't even rust properly. The outside of it was bare brown metal when I got it like 15 years ago, covered in a layer of that powdery orange rusty dust inside and out. It looked a mess. I figured it would only be a very temporary measure because it would surely rust completely away in no time.
After I wiped it off with WD40 it just stayed as it was forever. It's never gotten the least bit worse over all these years.
Maybe the metal of the tank shields the electromagnet on the outside so it can't work on the ball bearing inside?
If so that would mean putting the electromagnet on the inside of the tank. Probably not a good idea for sparky reasons.
And the tank is grounded to the frame, so maybe that makes another kind of difference.
