11.48, you beg the question 'So what?'. A list of random scores isn't controversial.
The series will, hopefully be a battle of the titans. Lots of close games, ties. You know, opportunities for the boys on the best two teams to show what they can and are willing to do to take home the prize. Hopefully the benches will be full to start and there's no stupid crap unrelated to real hockey. Maybe the two coaches will be so busy trying to win they will be invisible and won't become part of the show. All this said:
Marlies in 7, better coaching. |

Better coaching ?
can you please name one significant tournament or play-off series that ST's coaching has won for the Marlies since he has been coach. |

'a battle of the titans'
I thought the Titans were out but glad to see them get the bye to the final - Ben deserves that. I'll pick the Titans in 7, Alex. |

Oh, well. Just trying to initiate an exchange. By 'better coaching' I meant 'my style of coaching' as compared to 'improv comedy coaching'.

Offence vs. Defence. JRC 200 goals..TM 144. JRC 50 against...TM 39.
JRC have the better forwards...TM have the better D. JRC get in done when the chips are on the line. Have won big games for years and know how to win.
JRC will win this series. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 4 2008, 12:15 PM |
I beg to differ. JrC are deeper at forward. More high end players. Should have 4 forwards drafted first round. Remember they also have the #1 pick! Marlies have possibly 2 forwards being drafted first round. Marlies have forwards that play two ways. All forwards backcheck and help with the break out.
JrC have the same number of D being drafted early rounds. Heard from Newport, feedback from the scouts is that JrC #21 best D in the league.
As for goals for and against:
If you look only at the games that Marlies and JrC played against each other and the other top 3 teams (Red Wings, Majors, and Nats)
Marlies 49GF and 21 GA
JrC 49GF and 26 GA.
Pretty evenly matched on paper.
Marlie coaches seem to respect the game and their opponents more and understand that running up the score is not important against weaker teams:
JrC vs. Don Mills 11-0
JrC vs. Rebels 15-0
JrC vs. Kings 10-1
I agree with the post, hopefully this won't become a show with respect to the coaches.
Series will come down to who wants it more!!! and who has less injury illness issues at this time!! |

"Series will come down to who wants it more!!! and who has less injury illness issues at this time!!"
Isn't that what it always comes down to? That is a Joe Bowen comment(i.e. stating the obvious). E.g. "Which ever team scores the most will win the game" |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 4 2008, 2:29 PM |
I beg to differ with your difference. If your comparing the TM offence to the JRC's with games that they played vs. the same teams, than you have to use them all the games and don't come with the "ST respects the game more, so that's why they can't score vs. the weaker teams" theory. ST chirps opposing players from the bench...so is that respect? Ask the JRC, ask the majors, ask the sens and ask the trw!
And all the JRC's forwards backcheck too, except the so called #1 pick in your eyes. Seems like newport confides in you personally about who's being drafted and where. Don't think teams will be selecting kids that are going the college route in the first round and two for sure are taking that route, so your info is wrong.
JRC..two series...eight games. TM...two series...eleven games. Those extra games will matter in this series after the TM D is banged around the way they are about to be. |

11:33am - re:
"JRC get it done when the chips are on the line. Have won big games for years and know how to
win. JRC will win this series."
- given the thousands upon thousands of dollars that HS has put into this 1992 team over the last 5 years
such as paid coaches, recruiting costs (nudge nudge, wink wink), one-on-one coaching for his son, etc.,
anything short of a championship at both these GTHL Finals and OHL Cup will be a huge disappointment.
Never mind this series, the ultimate match I'm waiting for is JC's vs. Elgin Middlesex.
The Big Money Machine from Toronto vs. the low budget, ass-kicking, 6 foot plus farm boys from outside London.

It is going to be an interesting series for sure. Most of the coaching has already been done. Yes, they are held accountable by the coaches and adjustments from the bench can play an important role in any playoff series. But, for the most part, it is up to the players now. It's time to find out if all the number crunching above means much, if anything at all. Hopefully it means we are in for a great series between two bitter rivals! It is all about performance and execution now and let's hope both teams are healthy.
You have one team who has been winning it all for years and another who, you could argue, has been the better team this season to date. At the very least, they have a better regular season record and finished 1st overall. That is a huge accomplishment competing in a league with such a dominant competitor.
So now we get to find out if the JC's just dial it up a notch when it counts or if the improvements the TM's have made this year will result in a new GTHL champion. For the GTHL, this series will prove more than any single game in an OHL Cup will, should they meet there also. Anything can happen in one game. The true champ between these two rivals will be decided in this 4 out of 7 series in my opinion.
Game on! |

124.16 we know...it's all about the money! HS IS OUT RIGHT NOW IN THE SNOW SHARPENING SKATES AND GETTING CUSTOM STICKS FOR HIS TEAM, SO THEY CAN SKATE FASTER AND SCORE MORE GOALS.
Elgin Middlesex is code for the Toronto Nats. Two man team that has never beaten the JRC. All the GTHL teams are worried sick about the prospects of playing a team that has six foot farm-boys on it. We don't eat provisions here in the city and our kids don't grow that big!! LOL!!!
This series...like last years MM final is a preview of the OHL Cup championship game. |

why is everyone so worried about elgin?
they won one lucky tournement where they didnt have to play any tough teams from the G and last time i checked when they went up head to head against the marlies the marlies won 5-1. |

ya, and elgin beat yse 5-1, and yse beat the marlies.
NO one game or one tournament measures the greatness of a team.
Elgin is still behind the top teams, but they have caught up.
Should be a great series, and a great OHL cup whether it is an all gthl final or not |

2 JC goals not counted. 1 top mesh all the way missed by ref. Another called off after Anderson kicked ther net off which he did 7 times without a penaly. Come on refs the kid does this all the time. Stop with the warnings. First Marlie goal on an interference with the Jc goalie. Poorly reffed game all around. Canadians thw stronger team by far . Didn't bury several chances. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 5 2008, 10:28 PM |
Same old story. Marlies have outstanding goaltending so it is hard to score on them. Canadiens, well....you know. Dozens of saves by the Marlie goalie, at least a half dozen saves by the Canadien goalie. Switch things around and the score tonight would have been 15-0 Canadiens. Marlies need more production up front. |

|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 5 2008, 11:12 PM |
Anderson played awesome but the JC's took it to them in the 3rd. Two stretch passes for breakaways to goal scorers hiding behind the D-men in the 3rd period of a 2-2 game. This is not acceptable if you're the TM. Anderson stoned them bothed. Huge saves. But the JC's scored a beauty back door one timer that even Johnny Bower wouldn't have stopped. Very nice goal to win it with less than a minute to go.
The JC's were the stronger team tonight. Maybe Anderson can steal them a game or two but I can't see the Marlies beating this team. Too many horses. |

"Anderson lost the game for his team, soft goals buddy"
You seem to have it out for Anderson. I would guess the shots to be about 50 - 9 for the JC's. If not for Anderson this one could have easily been 8-2. I am not so sure about this great Marlie defence, as they were unable to get the puck out of their own end for extended periods.
|
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 6 2008, 8:28 AM |
not sure why the discuusion about Anderson. He was clearly the Marlies best player. Looks like the complaint was about his well known habit of kicking the net off and referees missing calls at both ends of the rink. Otherwise a pretty good game with a lot of pace. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 6 2008, 8:41 AM |
Same old pattern. Someone compliments a player on a great game and someone else tries to drag the player down. I'll only say it once as I saw the game last night alone with about a dozen scouts. Anderson played the absolute best game I have ever seen a goalie at this age ever play. Easily, he made over 45 saves. Many of these saves resulted in spontaneous applause from the crowd. I agree with the previous poster that if he hadn't played this well the game would have been double digits for the Canadiens. The Marlies cannot hope to be successful if they allow anywhere near the same number of quality chances as they allowed last night. There seemed to be a huge talent differential last night. The Canadiens looked like they have a very deep bench and at times the Marlies looked like they were in shock. Congratulations to Anderson. And lets look forward to some more exciting hockey. This one won't be over for a while... |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 6 2008, 11:26 AM |
The Marlies had a good first period and led 2-0 at one point but then the JCs took over. The Marlies started to look tight and tentative. Once the score was tied. the Marlies looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. Th pressure got to them. Except for Andersen, this one isn`t close. What`s worrying for the Marlies is that they couldn`t have had a better start...what happens when the JCs come out ready to play? As for the JCs, they may not have more talent but they do have way more confidence and energy in pressure situations. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 6 2008, 11:42 AM |
Most people on here have it right...Anderson was the story of the night. Shots were 3-1 easily and even though the TM scored on their first two shots, you could see the JRC were not fazed. JRC players were also very disipline last night and avoided the after-the-whistle crap, while the TM took two dumb ones after the whistle. Berger called an alright game, except for the two goals he missed. One...net kicked off, the other...a rocket by oconnor that was in and out before he could blink. JRC the fresher team and those extra games played by the TM showed. JRC even used a couple of 93's and they did not look out of place and did not hurt the team. Series won't last as long as many think if the TM are relying on anderson to win games for them. |

O vs. D and if their goalie has a bad game...lights out! This is what happens when a team relies so heavyly on one player and when that one player is your goalie...nuff said. You could literally see the air leave the TM when the JRC scored on their second shift and first real shot of the game. I have never seen a team come out the way the JRC did. The first shift three shifts were a total of one minute combined. Kids that don't normally finish checks were finishing checks and everybody was in the game before the ice dried. This is how the first game went...except anderson kept them in the game. Clendening made matters worse by hitting several players from behind, until he finally crossed the line, getting himself a game. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 8 2008, 1:19 PM |

Remember scout's also look at family background when making considerations and let me tell you for those that feel they have to bash or critizie don't be surprized if they know exactly who you are from this sight. |

I remember a thread many moons ago that discussed ST coming aboard as the coach of the TMs. One individual raved about how great it would be with an NHL player because that automatically made him a great coach. I guess we are seeing now that simply because you played in the NHL doesn't make you a great coach and certainly doesn't make you a great coach for 16 boys.
ST is completely in over his head and has no idea what to do. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 10 2008, 6:45 PM |
In all fairness, but at this stage of the season ,i think this has very little to do with ST, and more to do with the JC. Not even with Scotty Bowman behind the TM bench or any other Minor Midget AAA bench
(Compuware, Elgin, etc.) are you going to win a 7 game series vs. the JC. NEVER. The TM know the JC better than anyone in the Ontario AAA loop - and for this reason seemed to have lost their wheels after losing game 1. It's like those Stanley Cup Finals that finish 4 straight - do you blame the coach ? do you blame the players ?
BOTTOM LINE - Give credit where credit is due - The JC are a talent-laden team that have played text book hockey....but yes, a better effort from the TM was expected.
This lop-sided series has more to do with the JC executing relentlessly dominating, perfect hockey and less to do with what the TM coach has done or didn't do thus far - with apologies to the ST bashers.
My objective two cents from a non-marlie. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 10 2008, 6:57 PM |
Yours is probably a good enough synopsis but I wonder if the coaching can make a difference at these late stages. DC has likely given his boys something to play for in this series and it's likely some pride/vengeance thing. He's probably been winding up the springs for a couple weeks to ready them mentally. Has the Marlies coach done anything like it? |

JM skates are only size 10. It would be pretty easy to have a bigger head than skates. I love you parents, you rag on the Junior Canadiens when they lose, then when they win you rag on them some more. No matter what they do parents are going to rag on them. The jealous speaks volumes.
Lets go JC, put the nail in the Marlie's coffin. |

everyone is a joke on this site
you all are going to wake up when the draft comes and all of this nonsense will stop. I have been watching the GTHL for years and I am not a parent nor related to any of these players. I do know for one thing that hockey is a sport that is highly competitive... emotions will always come into play either through the parents or players. The thing that really confused me is everyone seems to pick on the top players. I have seen it in the OHL with high end players like Corey Perry and look at him now.
Mark my words for all you people who have critiqued top players like mcfarland, seguin, skinner etc...these kids are the real deal of the gthl...and players like mcfarland may even be the face of the OHL (who knows) someday. In 3 years you will be talking about how your kids had the opportunity to play beside kids that had the talent to go to that next level. So all this crap about parents talking back and forth about the top kids in the gthl and draft is disrespectful and nonsense. Don't be mad at the way top players play their game...not all good players are nice people on the ice... but for some thats what makes them that much better. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Marlies Vs. JC | March 11 2008, 10:36 PM |
more Don Cherry garbage, you bring up Corey Perry, he is one of the lucky ones
for all the parents who think they are investing in their kid's future........remember that London Knights team a few years ago that won the Memorial Cup and was supposed to be a superteam..........how many of the 17 or so players made it to the NHL.............give up........2 are player full time, that's it........if your kid can get something out of this other than $40,000 a year, arthritis, concussions, and bus butt in the minors, then you are the luck one like Cory Perry.....otherwise, don't even open your mouth |
