if they are as well run as the U16 camps last year, they will be a good experience for the boys. a chance to play with guys you may not otherwise get a chance to play with, hopefully knowledgable coaching.sure they're making money, but, have you not spent money on other camps that were a cash grab? let those who get in enjoy, those who didn't apply should shut up. Only 80 get into the GTHL camp, i don't know how many to the regional camps.

Collingwood Camp has all the top players from the teams in their area. There are a couple of interesting choices, but maybe they see something everyone else doesn't. Seems to balance weaker and stronger kids. Should be interesting.

Under 17

April 21 2008, 6:42 PM

I went to watch some OMHA, and also some Alliance, what came out of these camps is one thing. This is just a huge money grab. I would have to say that 95% is predetermined. It is a shame for the players that go and works their butts off in camp and do not get noticed. There were some great players at the camps I watched.....but the scouts have seen them all year. Nothing is going to change in a weekend. I think it would be more fair to just pick the top 64 kids and have one main camp.....No I do not have a 1992 player.

Re: omha under 17 camp

If sutch didn't make it then I am in shock. He was awesome. I didn't find too many big egos this weekend. My kid had a great time. I thought it was well worth it to play a weekend with top quality players that you usually don't get to play with. Markham kids had the biggest egos there. I hope that Murphy is ok. They thought he broke his collarbone in the last game. Interested to see who all moved on. Goaltending was mediocre. Not one goalie played consistently. Black and white had hardly any shots on their goalies, while red goalies saw more rubber than a dead skunk on 401. Defense was not as strong as I thought they would be. Some surprisingly strong forwards.

I think people have to realize that these selections are not based on this weekend only.Alot was decided on how you played all year long and where you were ranked coming in to the weekend. Also how the boys played on offence, defence, work ethic on and off the ice as well as character are all factors, not just your point totals.

I beg to differ. This selection process is a snapshot assessment based on one weekend only. How could a handful of evaluators gather and analyse all the information you are suggesting? You will see on May 3rd that this U17 selection program is not a reliable predictor of the OHL draft.

Re: omha under 17 camp

April 22 2008, 2:10 PM

I think, in my opinion, .....and you know what they say about opinions?.....:>)
...is that you are both correct.
Perhaps it is almost figured out, and they need one more look at the boys. Some kids could have been borderline, and crossed over, and others that were deemed to be so terrific, or were and have "peaked", are dropped down in the great scheme of things.
I'm not sure how political it is at this point. I would hope this would be an opportunity to get all that c-rap out of the way.
The boys that got there should be congratulated. That is the proper thing to do.
Those that got to go to this camp and did not progress, congratulations too. Look at what you have accomplished. You were among an elite bunch of young men this weekend, you were one of them.

We need to move on.
It's exciting. The draft is coming up, and a lot of kids that we have known for many years will get drafted. An honor. Let them enjoy it.
If you have a kid lucky enough to be one of those, good job. You probably were a good hockey parent.

these camps mean nothing except to finance the final ontario under 17 team that will actually play next Christmas. More than 3/4 of these kids will be nowhere to be found then. 4 kids on the ontario under 17 team did not even participate in these camps last year. Just say goodbye to your money and when you watch at Christmas time you will see how your money was actually spent

you are bang on. However it still is a good experience for the boys who make it to the camps as they compete against good competition and for the ones who think they should have made it through its a wake up call you need to put forth your best effort every time you step on the ice.

The SCTA must obviously lack coaching. Lots of potential but these boys are not even close to their potential. Hopefully they will develop at the next level.

Team Ontario doesn't get any money from the Regional Camps. The money stays with each organization.

Thank-you! Please tell these fools. It's only the parents of kids that were not selected that come on here with the money grab talk. We've all been thru it before now and cutting one more cheque should not have been a surprise.

you think that some of the kids that were picked from
Whitby, Peterborough etc can even compare with some of the kids that were left off the lists from other organizations. Dont kid yourselves all the money does not stay with the organizations. There is a cut that is sent to the OHL. You think that whoever is coaching this team come December is going to look at these kids that make this first cut ha ha. They are going to look at the kids that are playing in the OHL and are making a mark

not some small 5 foot 4 kid that has made it cause thats all there is in Peterborough

"They are going to look at the kids that are playing in the OHL and are making a mark."

Your are 100% bang on. But come May 9-11 and June 26-29th. The kids who were lazy and went threw the motions this past weekend won't be there that I can guarantee you and the OHL teams who have those kids rated high might be questioning the kids work ethic after all what is a regional camp for 1st and 2nd round draft picks - should be a walk in the park am I not right. Well the park must have had a slippery slope.

Canadian team head coach Pat Quinn had nothing but lavish praise for his players.

''We couldn't have had a better character bunch of young men than this group together,'' he said. ''They truly came together as a team and yes, maybe there was more skilled guys that we didn't bring over here but that just points out the skills-only part of the equation.

''There is skill and character and we had an abundant character with this crew.''

"Skills-only" part of the equation. Get ready for more of that and suprises after Guelph camp.

Some of the decisions made were good ones while others were way off. There were picks made that were merely political. There were at least 5 players missed that were much better than those who were picked. As one scout said..This is a joke, lets get out of here!!

How would a scout have known who was picked until after the camp was finished and everyone went home. Maybe he was commenting on the action on the ice.

I do believe the oshawa boy is the son of one of the coaches, personally I dont think he should be there. The team that was picked from peterborough was not the best players.I think it was already picked before hand, and petes and whitby were going to be favoured. Beukeboom was playing forward for parts of the tourney, I think we all knew he was going to make the cut before even going. He does play the position well, nothing special. The defence was weak, the three from the petes were good choices, and beukeboom, but I think the two other boys from central and whitby, and the Ap was not picked well. It makes me think that they were picked already going in too it. I guess will we all find out may 3rd

What did any of those boys above do that they should have been picked. I will give you Davis but the rest surely did not do anything more to deserve a spot then the ones that did get picked. By the way riding your stick (showboating)after a goal won't help your cause. Everyone know who I'm talking about.

People get so focused on certain players that others are always looked at not having a chance! Open your eyes everyone, maybe the evaluators look at the overall package and not at who's a sniper, who's the most aggressive or who hits the hardest etc.... I would think a player that has the ability to see the entire ice, good skater, understands positioning, has leadership ability, not SELFISH, posses a decent shot and is coachable are traits that any coach would want. The players above are all good players but there are many more that always get over looked by you and I.

Look at the Simcoe camp. The camp was non contact and most of the kids that advanced are under 5'8.The coach of Hamilton Bulldogs is family friends with the main evaluator R.N.Guess who advanced, all 4 kids of the Bulldogs coaching staff. The 2 d-man were 2 of the worst at the camp.

So what's your point, did you watch any of the games, the boy from Oshawa stood out quite a bit and certainly did not look out of place. Seemed to be a lot more involved in the play then many of the so called "gotta watch kids".

"The defence was weak, the three from the petes were good choices, and beukeboom, but I think the two other boys from central and whitby, and the Ap was not picked well. It makes me think that they were picked already going in too it. I guess will we all find out may 3rd."

Obviously, you must be a "D" parent who's kid was not picked. Jealousy is blinding and for you, you seem to have a hard time seeing past your own son's talents. All three of the so called week D you claim are solid contributors to there own hockey teams and if you watched them throughout the weekend they where solid and very consistent to their regular season play. But of course your eye's where planted solidily on your own boy only.

Hey I was in Peterborough with my son and we had a blast. Unfortunately, for him he didn't get selected for the next camp but he enjoyed himself immensely and had a great time meeting new friends. Stop the whinning and stop judging all the kids. Congratulations to all of those selected and hopefully you will represent the Peterborough Regional Camp with pride.

but why can't you accepted the fact that maybe someone saw something in those kids that obviously you didn't or you refuse to see. Why would the evaluators select kids that as you claim are not as talented as your kid oopps as other kids that should have been selected. Obviously, your kid must have been the mosted talented out there and that's why he wasn't chosen!!!! I can't believe I said that and stupped to your level. Let it go pal and enjoy whatever hockey your son has left in him. The selection has been made move on and again congratulations to those boys that where selected. Make all us proud!

agree 100%, Sutch was the best kid at camp. It was actually the first time I had met him and thought he was a really nice young man as well as a great hockey player. That the D kid and the goalies are really the only surprises.

most people ? not the ones that matter.

Gregg Sutch/RW- York-Simcoe- Big, strong horse scored twice, once on a wicked pro-calibre snap shot from the high slot, but overall didnít wow us. Our biggest issue wasnít his effort rather that he tried doing too much himself and didnít see the ice at all. Has the tools to become a very effective power winger at the next level but must also learn to play a smart, simple game within his capabilities

Please do not insult the intelligence of people who were at the camp without a kid on the ice.
Some of the players picked were favors owed and past performances.
There is no way the kid from Grand Valley should have moved on.
Humor me and give us his evaluation.....

Just incase anyones wonderin the AA goalie didnt take Haase's spot as he has been a AAA goalie the prior 2 years. I saw him play when he played for Central in his Major Bantam year and definetly impressed me. I then watched him at the Under 17 camp and in my opinion was one of the top 4 goalies there. He was well deserving of his invite to the camp.
