Can someone tell me where the GMHL fits in the Canadian junior hockey picture. Good league, bad league, what type of player goes there and why, etc... Thanks
Try looking through these 2 Jr A forums , some discussion on the GMHL.

Why would these kids agree to be on this so called draft list now ?.OHL , Jr A , B , etc. camps are not over yet , why join this league before exhausting all your possibilites.
93's and 92's are eligible for the 2009 OHL draft so what happens when they play in the GHML instead ?

As for the double entry for Ryan Kasper, they may have just mixed up the
name since his twin brothers name is Ron Kasper, maybe both were drafted

Since when is their "agreement" necessary to be on a list or to be drafted? There were kids to clearly told the OHL to pound sand, and they were still drafted anyway. Probably not smart to assume the kids drafted by the GMHL have any interest or not.

Let me get this straight, this league actually
drafted kids that were not at this showcase. If so this is fraud. Now you have kids from another country
thinking they were drafted by a jr a team in a jr a
league. This is the first step in ripping off these kids.Shame on the gmhl

"probably would rank about wher junior D is under hockey canada's rankings"
I guess the NCAA universities like junior d because 3 kids on the Richmond Hill Rams were offered full scholarships. 2 of them division 3 and the goalie received a scholarship offer from Clarkson D1.

Re: GMHL

I think you have to accept the fact that the core
of this league is jr d or jr c calibre.Div 3 is
nothing to brag about. If you have to tell people
how good your team or league or coach or owner etc is
are you really doing a good job.As far as a div 1 offer
for your goalie nothing should fall short than great for him.

I believe you are missing the point....full rides..athletically...do not exist at the DIII level! And you r right...an education is an education..kind of...but the fact remains, this league classifies itself as Junior A when it is nowhere near the calibre.

Athletic scholarships are not available at the div. 3 level however " financial aid " is (whether the family needs it or not ). These schools offer full financial compensation to the student's fees for some athlete's and the level of hockey is really strong at many of them.
Schools such as Oswego, Plattsburg State, Elmira, Middlebury, Manhattenville and Hamilton College just to name a few have fantastic reputations for their hockey programs.

With all the alledged scouting going on in the gmhl, why no interest in it,s stock from the nhl? First rounder from st kitts jrb cjhl and the opjhl were also well represented. The first step for the gmhl to get any respect is to drop the jra for what it truly is jrd or jrc.How many cheques would be written then? All jra teams have cash grabs but the not season long cash grab as in the gmhl.

For $7,000 you too can play against 20 year olds!
Or you can spend $450 and play in the Carnevale summer league against Tier II and OHL older kids.
Your choice.

Interesting how we all get hung up on the letters. Does this mean that a Junior B team could not send guys to the "O"? Actually, the letters started with the size of the centre and the not the quality of hockey.
As far as I know this is a good league otherwise Hockey Canada wouldn't be giving it so much attention. For those that truly know and not those dumb leaf fans that go to see a product that stinks and pay how much to see these guys play?
Why is the OHA working on a development model similar to the GMHL? Wondering how this will work out? I'm thinking the hockey in Canada is only gonna get better which means you all (yall, sorry American comin out) are going to benefit from some great hockey.
gmhl trying to make cash on the backs of hockey players?

Re: GMHL
July 17 2008, 10:16 PM
IF join the GMHL you can pretty much hang up your skates for your Hockey Career. After playing or otherwise participating in that league you lose eligibility to Hockey Canada and its programs. They are yet to have a player drafted from their league to the NHL. They are a private industry, as such you have no recourse if you disagree with the league rules/decision on a matter. That and you won't get to go to the RBC where there are A LOT of NHL scouts. The choice is yours, its your money, your hockey career do as you wish, just don't expect to be allowed to return to Hockey Canada for a year, and at this stage of the game a year is A LOT!

Re: GMHL
July 18 2008, 1:00 PM
Darren Archibald played for the richmond hill rams and then went to the stouffville spirit the year after. He never waited 1 year as many players go from the gmhl to the opjhl... nice try thoe
Interesting how our society is either based on fear or greed. Hockey Canada has developed a fear of this league- ask yourself why? If these players are not going to go anywhere anyways, why does it matter? The larger question is, do you want to play and develop or be under Hockey Canada's thumb which really cares very little about it's players. Case in point: There are a group of players who have been drafted into the OHL in the 4th round/ 5 th round. These guys are 16 and because the OHL only allows 2 players on their roster. Your gonna have to be drafted in the first round even if you want to get some potent playing time on the 4th line- how does this help the development of the player? Because he travels on the bus with the OHL team? Or, is it per chance by osmosis that this player becomes better sitting next to the players on the bus? I'm not sure? So this player decides with his parents that he wants to go and play and continue to develop and come back next year? The player decides that he will join a junior c affiliate and then proceeds to try-out for the Junior C team- he doesn't make it, as the Junior c teams only allows 1 player 16 years of age. This player then thinks maybe I'll go back to Midget and play there for one more year? Oops, the coach knows the player has an issue with him and decides not to take him on to his team. The player then decides to go to the AA team in his local centre and finds out that the local AA team coach doesn't like his attitude- ah shucks better go to the A loop where my dad is the coach and makes the team. The play is too slow for the player- he looses interest quits hockey and takes up ping pong.
The score Hockey Canada 1, potential prospect 0. Wow, now there's development for you. Yeah your right, stay in Hockey Canada's stable and watch how all of the options unfold for you.

Re: GMHL
July 18 2008, 5:09 PM
PEOPLE DON,T HAVE TO BE IN THE KNOW TO KNOW ENOUGH
WHAT THE GMHL IS ALL ABOUT.Liars and owners who
can,t afford to run real jra teams.
Yes you are right with liars and cheaters they exist in all walks of life but they eventually get exposed only a matter of time. This clip was when the WHA ( a new league was formed)because of restrictions imposed. Better to remove restrictions then there is no room for any liars or cheaters just good hockey and great people.
Since its inception and until the 1970s, the National Hockey League (NHL) allowed teams to have a reserve clause —if a player's contract was ending, a club could automatically renew the contract, without negotiation. Clubs also had the option of retaining a player’s rights even after being dropped from an NHL roster. Players lived in fear of being cut and never being granted the free agency that would allow them to find work with other teams. Often, players would accept lowball contract offers from ownership, knowing that if they decided to play tough in negotiations, they could be discarded and have their careers left in limbo.
Interesting- at one time the Junior a was also known as a renegade league. Please read this: Notice the RENEGADE!!
In 1991, the renegade Metro Junior A Hockey League promoted itself to fill the Junior "A" hockey void across the southern part of the province. In 1993, for the Ontario Hockey Association to compete, the Central Junior B Hockey League was promoted to Junior "A" and renamed the "Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League". The year of 1993 also marked the year that the Canadian Junior A Hockey League was created. Since 1994, OPJHL teams have won 8 of 13 Dudley Hewitt Cups as Central Canadian Champions to earn a birth in the Royal Bank Cup

this is to the guy who said that you lose all your hockey rights to hockey canada after u play in gmhl. He said u have to wait 1 year before returning to a hockey canada sactionated league like the opjhl. But he is wrong because many players play 1 year in the gmhl or 2 and then go play in the opjhl right away.
yes you are correct about playing in Hockey Canada
July 19 2008, 11:19 AM
I've witnessed player/s play in Hockey Canada system after coming form unsantioned leagues. Why HC( why am using caps?) would restrict players from playing is beyond me. Furthermore, why would people come on this board and spew this sh... if they don't know shut it and go cut your grass and check when your leaf renewal tickets will come in so you can watch an inferior product and pay through the nose.( and you call this honest?) Actually, hc( stopped using caps) has our tax money- oh wait I guess if you haven't used the highways lately( funded by taxes) and you used another route then you can't use our highways( I know it's a stretch but then hc is as well)
I must go to the b-room so I'm signing off.\
