CLASSMATE'S BIRTHDAYS

Wild Rose

by Patti

We believe it or not, I found a B&B in Spirit Lake, IA named Wild Rose...and needless to say, I am going to check it out. Our anniversary is Dec. 22 so I decided to make the plans this time instead of my hubby. The B&B is Victoria style with large white pillars, fireplace, and it overlooked the frozen lake Anyway, thought I would extend an invite to those of you who care to join me. Love you guys,

Now What Would We Be Doing...

by Kay H

on your anniversary get away? Seems like you would have something better to do...

Besides it's too short notice to go that far, at least if you live in or near Clintwood. The slower pace still applies in some areas.

I'm trying to get creative about an anniversary trip in April (our 35th), but I don't want to go that far.

PARADES----- Pompous display

by

Parades--- Veterans parade, a parade to honor our soldiers! Macy's Thanksgiving Parade to honor the Pilgrims at Plymoth rock; one of the founding settlers in America in 1520. Our past Christmas parades were to give our Savior praise and honor that He deserves, Celebrating the birth of our Savior. The Christmas Parades of Christmas past!
This past parade in Clintwood, Virginia, categorized the floates, as CHRISTmas or Religion! Well, someone goofed!

Christmas December 25 celebrated as the birthday of Christ.
Religion- Service and worship of God ;Organized system of faith and worship.

So,why were there two categories?
I am glad that I was not a part of this parade!
I too, am offended Ina Kaye ! I would have signed my name with you.

with both of you. Christmas has become to commercalized and the merchants start a little earlier every year. It isn't their fault because I'm sure that is when they make a lot of their money. I remember the good old days when we didn't get many presents, decorations were modest but we were content with the fellowship of family and friends. A nativity scene was always in our home during Christmas.

It Missed Us

by

We had a warning for the 6 inches of snow, but got zip. It is turning cold here, relatively speaking. At least it seems to whistle through the clothes and chill to the bone.

My husband always likes the idea of a white Christmas. I'm ambivalent. I love Christmas, and even love snow in moderation. But, I think about all the people out travelling on our mountain roads when it's bad.

When our Moms were alive (my Dad died before we met, his Dad right after we were married), we would traverse the treacherous to be with Mom and siblings (his on Christmas Eve, mine on Christmas Day). A lot of times it was pretty hair raising driving, but with the Lord's help we always made it through.

I'm envious, Jenni

by Janice

Wish I were going to Pigeon Forge. Hope you don't get snowed in, but a fireplace and a jacuzzi sounds like a great way to be snowed in! Speaking of snow, I'm counting on it to keep me out of school tomorrow. I may be in for a rude awakening in the morning, seeing as how I'm still up at 1:00 am. I can use a day off to try and get caught up on some stuff. I love Christmas. I've been hearing all this stuff in the last few days about people using the term "holiday tree" instead of Christmas tree and changing the name of our breaks. Wonder if these people even know how the Christmas tree got started. I don't care who it offends. Our country was founded by Christian leaders and people, some of who came here for freedom of worship. There's these people wanting to take the words "In God We Trust" off our coins and "One Nation Under God" out of the pledge of Allegiance. Oh, and Heaven Forbid if the 10 Commandments are displayed somewhere. Are they planning on rebuilding the Supreme Court Building? It shows Moses receiving the 10 Commandments and has them written. The Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials have some of these presidents' speech excerpts written on the walls, and God is mentioned several times. Such people are the minority, and I don't think we should change our country because of them. If they don't like it, let them leave!!!!!!!! I still read my children the true Christmas story at school and my bulletin board in the hallway always has the nativity scene on it at Christmas. That's a lot of what's wrong in our schools today, no discipline, no teaching right from wrong...the last 6 of the 10 commandments teach us how we should treat others, and as Jesus summed it up..."Love thy neighbor as thyself." When the shootings at Columbine High School happened, an e-mail was being sent around. A child was supposed to have asked God why He allowed such a thing to happen. His reply, "You forget, I'm not allowed in schools anymore". Christmas is a celebration of the birth of God's son. If people don't like it, too bad. It's time we Christians, who are the majority, stand up for our rights. I rest my case. Good night and God bless.

I Don't Want to be Offensive,

by

to anyone who reads this board who does not celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ. I respect your beliefs and your rights to approach life differently. However, if you are concerned about a spiritual need, please e-mail me off the board and I will be glad to help you or point you to someone who can.

But, most of us here are Christians or Christian oriented through upbringing, so I wanted to share a little piece I wrote for this week's church bulletin:

Preparing for Christmas

What thought comes to mind when you think about preparing for Christmas? Is it cleaning the house, planning the cooking, writing the cards? What about decorating and shopping for just the right gifts? Do you think of all the special activities, or the exercise you're going to have to do in January to combat the holiday pounds?

There is another form of preparation that is often neglected. Christians decry the worldliness and commercialism of the season while buying into the idea that certain things must be accomplished in order for Christmas to be perfect. After all, that tree must be up by a certain time and everything just so.

While we talk about others for leaving Christ out of Christmas, does He have central place in ours? In Colossians we learn that in ALL things Christ is to have preeminence. That doesn't mean we cannot enjoy the fun of the season in moderation.

It does mean that we should give thought to our celebration and find ways to honor the Lord in all we do. That may mean some thought to helping the needy or visiting and giving attention to the elderly, ill, or lonely. It definitely means we should take time to reflect on The Perfect Christmas Gift, our Saviour.

Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Offended...

by

I am not! I agree. The meaning of Christmas should be in our hearts all year long, not only in December. I think we need to give whenever we see someone in need-not just at Christmas.
It is becoming too commercialized, leaving out the real meaning of Christmas. It seems like the stores are beginning earlier each year displaying the "Holiday" decorations. Pretty soon they will start in July or leave it out all year!!!
Another thing. Schools get winter breaks, not Christmas breaks; spring breaks, not Easter breaks!! The breaks happen the same times, just called something else, now. You know we can't offend the atheists!!!
Love,
Sharon

Let's Get Profound for the Holidays....

by

NOT...

What's your favorite Christmas treat? Sharon has already rung in with Fantasy Fudge.

We all have a sweet tooth somewhere (even if we take it out at night and leave it in a cup in the bathroom). Other goodies may not be sweet, but don't come out much except the holidays.

I would have a hard time choosing a favorite, but I love coconut macaroons, and this year I'm going to try my hand at maple nut fudge. Other snacks we like are sausage balls, cheese ball, and homemade Chex mix.

My husband likes Ritz crackers filled with peanut butter and dipped with white chocolate, not sure if this has a name or not.

Then there's the stovetop chocolate oatmeal drop cookies--these were served sometimes for school lunches in our past. My Mom made them for many years, and I follow the tradition. My in-laws call them Chewy Charlies.

Oh well, if I make all these it ought to be good for adding a few pounds. It's hard to get motivated to walk if off after the weather turns cold, so I guess it will just be insulation till spring.

Gosh Kay

by

you make me really dig deep for my idea of my favorite Christmas treat. I too try to make all that fatting stuff we really don't need. I think back to when I could eat all I wanted and not worry about weight gain.... now, it is only a dream to eat it all and not see the pounds jump on the body!

Not meaning to change the subject....

We started a tradition several years ago on the Powers side of the family of doing a progressive dinner on Christmas day. We usually fix Clam Chowder--Dan's favorite recipe. All the family come to our house for the appetizer, then we go to his sister's house--Pat and Hoover-- and will usually have dinner there and progress to his brother's house--Randy and Darlene--for dessert. It is a wonderful full day of visiting and eating!!! We always fix too much!

that sounds like such a wonderful way to spend the day. Kay, I really like homemade fantasy fudge but I don't make it much anymore because I will have to eat it if I do and I don't need it. My family always requests that I make cheeseballs for our Christmas gathering. And I also, like the ritz crackers with peanut butter dipped in white chocolate. I made chocolate covered cherries one year but that was a lot of work. My biggest problem is - I LIKE EVERYTHING!

Chocolate Covered Cherries

by

I did homemade ones in 1976, and it was TOO much trouble. But keep that as my little secret. My husband wasn't home that year; he spent that Christmas in Korea unaccompanied (his last of 9 years in the army). If he knew I could make them, I would be in trouble, because he dearly loves that candy.

When we lived in Chattanooga, we went on a tour of the Brach candy company. They had fresh made ones just off the assembly line and allowed us to sample. It was delicious, much more tasty than the ones we get in the store.

Jenni, by the way, I just got a Christmas card from my camping in-laws: with a decorated RV driving down the road on the front.

If you haven't tried this receipe, you are missing out!!!
Kaye, I can't write poems all the time! I liked that one Julia printed for TG; I couldn't come up with a better one, so I didn't try. I did write a verse a month or two ago that Jenni might want to use to get poems from everybody else. Here it is:

They Shouldn't Call it Camping...

by

We used to go camping (many moons ago), the old fashioned way with two army shelter halfs (put together to make a pup tent) and sleeping bags.

This summer we visited Jim's sister and brother-in-law in an RV park in North Carolina where they were roughing it in a motor home that looked more like a luxury hotel inside than anything to do with camping. Now they've traded it for a newer model!

Not complaining, I love the creature comforts, and if I went with the present level of aches and pains, it would have to be the easy way. I still prefer the B&B's or a motel and good restaurant where someone else does all the work.

I've Had Experience...

not with camping so much, but we lived in a trailer not much bigger than that (and without the slide out) for 3 years while my husband was in Bible college--and even had a friend stay with us a semester when she lost her scholarship and could no longer afford the dorm.

Of course, it was a whole different ballgame. The trailer was a 1952 model, sort of reminiscent of the one Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz honeymooned in for the movie The LongestTrailer, except 30 years later.

We called it the U.B. (for Ugly Blessing). It was adequate and affordable, but not exactly the lap of luxury.

We occasionally have 20 to 30 but you are right, it is the exception to the rule. Once we have snow here it doesn't melt but starts to build a winter coat on the ground so even tho it may warm up temp wise, the ground is frozen and maintains the snow... Only the strong survive. Take care and hope to see you in March.. Stay warm....

Patti

Is this Patti Newberry? I remarried in 1999 to a wonderful guy who is so good to me. I have no children. However, I have 3 stepchildren, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild who I adore. They all live in Arizona except for 1 stepson, Rich, who lives in Fredericksburg VA. Since I live in Alexandria, it takes about over an hour for us to visit. Rich has just gotten out of a relationship and working several jobs to stay on top of his bills. We saw him every weekend until about six weeks ago so we do miss him.

I am working in Personnel for the Federal government. I'll be eligible for a reduced annuity in two years and the regular annuity in 3 1/2 years. I'll retire in two years if Mom isn't doing well. My husband wants to come back to Clintwood when I retire. He is already retired from the government but has a job working full time. I guess he loves to work. I am really looking forward to retirement.

So how are you and your kids? What did you serve for Thanksgiving dinner?

My husband and I just moved less than two weeks ago. My computer wasn't working for some time at home. I am writing from the office.

I have 2 years until I can retired with a hugh reduction to my annuity or 3 1/2 until full retirement.

My retirement date will be based upon my Mom's health. She just turned 90 and has problems with her mind. Actually, she probably has a better memory than I have these days.

I really don't know how you have made it after the death of your spouse and parents. I wouldn't be as kind as you are if I had those experiences.

I think the worse thing about leaving my job is missing the people.

Thanksgiving

by Janice

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope everyone has plenty of food to eat and lots of loved ones around to share it with. Also, happy belated birthday to Kaye Buchanan whose birthday was this past Saturday. One of my sons, Dustin, is already home and will be all week. It's great having him home. The other one gets to come Wednesday. I'm thankful for them and so many other things. May God bless all of our classmates. Patti, stay warm!

Counting Our Blessings

by Kay Hale

So many, it's hard to know where to begin: a personal relationship with Christ is always number one; a loving husband and extended family; a reasonably free country and a strong defense; whatever measure of health we've been dealt; and even for a good appetite to enjoy the holiday specialties.

For what are you most thankful, classmates?

God's mercy..

by

would have to be # 1 for me. Then I begin to think of other things I'm thankful for, and it is difficult to put them in any kind of order. Once I begin thinking of all the blessings, they are....because of His mercy and grace. I am thankful for everything.
I still have Mom and Dad whom I appreciate more and more each day; they have pretty good health; we still sing together! God has given us 7 years with Nicholas(he, himself, is an inspiration). Spencer, Michael.....I could go on and on....friends....
What more could I ask for?
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!
Love,
Sharon

Happy Thanksgiving!

by

I agree, Sharon does need to get on here and do one for us Kay! I didn't write this, but it is a good one... While we wait for Sharon, here is this:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!

When I was a young turkey, new to the coop,
My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop;

Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,
And he told me there was something that I had to know.

His look and his tone I will always remember,
When he told me of the horrors of... Black November;

"Come about August, now listen to me,
Each day you'll get six meals instead of just three."

"And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin, And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin;

And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed, In'll burst the farmer's wife, and hack off your head."

"Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald 'n pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin' in the sink;

And then comes the worst part" he said not bluffing, She'll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing."

Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat,

I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat; And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked,

I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked.
I began a new diet of nuts and granola,
High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola;

And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes.

I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;

But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death

And sure enough when Black November rolled around, I was the last turkey left in the entire compound;

So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap,
I haven't a worry, so I eat and I nap.

She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me and said

"Christmas is coming...."

Classmate Sighting

by Kay Hale

I saw Sharon Strouth Mullins at WalMart today, and took awhile to make sure it was her. She was wearing her hair down, and I hadn't seen it that way for years. Either way, it's lovely, and it's fun to run into folks you don't see often.

Just thinking with the Thanksgiving postings that all we need is a poem from Sharon to boost us along.

Over the river and through the woods
To Cissy Bear's house we go!

During Heritage Days in Pound a couple of years ago, I left my hair down and wore a pair of sunglasses; I walked by some students whom I saw every day, and they didn't know me either. I even spoke to them!
Hmmmmm....next class reunion! what do you think? Should I try that then?
On second thought, we'll probably have a hard time remembering as it is! ha ha
Have a good turkey day!

Rapunzel, Let Down Your Hair

by Kay Hale

I don't have to wait till next reunion to get confused!

I wore long hair for many years. After being totally bald for 8 months from chemotherapy in 1995, I haven't tried to grow it too long since.

I did learn, as other cancer survivors know, that there is no such thing as a bad hair day. To us, if you have hair it's a good day.

Thanksgiving is about to happen

by

I can't believe it is next week! I'm not even ready and should be baking all those good smelling things in the kitchen right now instead of being on here. But, I love last minute stress!

My cousins from Florida, Angelee (Mullins) Fynan and her husband, Tony, will arrive on Monday evening. Joyce (her sister) and husband, Chuck Broyles, will arrive on Sunday. We plan to have our dinner on Thanksgiving Day.

Our son, Dennis and family can't make it since his work schedule doesn't cooperate with turkey weekend. Bummer!

All of Dan's sisters and brothers will be home to celebrate Thanksgiving with Frank and then we plan to celebrate Frank's 85th birthday while they are all home. We should be exhausted by the time Thanksgiving holiday is over. And then.... Christmas is just around the corner.

So, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I'll probably have flour all over the place and no time to computer later!

Sounds Like a Grand Celebration

by Kay Hale

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, even with all the work. Cooking and sharing special food is a pleasure. My guest roster is greatly reduced now, but we'll have a good time anyway.

I love Thanksgiving because it centers on the idea of gratitude. Unlike the Pilgrims, we haven't had the experience of being truly hungry for extended periods, but we have so much for which to be thankful.

Whatever the circumstances of your holiday, take time to reflect and appreciate what you have and what you have had. For many there comes a time when gratitude must center on memories of years and loved ones past.

Be thankful and be blessed!

I'm Looking Forward to Winter

by Kay Hale

Of course, not being employed outside the home makes it more pleasant, since I have the option of cocooning on bad days. I love living where the weather changes, also where nothing is usually too extreme. Autumn has been wonderful, but there is something to be said for sitting by a warm fire with a cup of hot tea or cocoa, knowing that just outside your window it's cold, snowy, and blustery. Snuggling up in an afghan and counting my blessings makes me feel warm and secure.

I love snow but right now isn't a good time for us to get any. I do agree with Kay that I love the area we live in that is---well, just right! I don't think I could take winter coming on too soon.

A bed and breakfast... that is my dream to be somewhere enjoying life and being waited on. sigh! I'm sure that was a much needed R&R before returning to work.

I Love B&B's

by

We try to do one at least once a year, though usually only for one night. In the spring we stayed in a huge 200 year old house in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and toured Civil War sites (a favorite thing to do).

In the winter we usually don't venture forth much--except to see local Christmas light displays, church activities, and shopping.

Just got through making a baby afghan for one of the girl's that Joe used to work with in Buchanan County.

Visitation for Rebecca's mother

by Janice

I don't know how some of you feel about going to a funeral home. I don't think anyone likes to go, but I have discovered that it is a worthwhile thing to do. When I went to the visitation for Elizabeth, Rebecca seemed so pleased. She made the comment that she thought I was the only classmate that she had seen there. Shortly thereafter, tho, Lanny came. I mentioned it to Benny the next day at school, and he said he had been there earlier and talked to Rebecca, but maybe she had forgotten. She has been through a lot in the past few days. I usually try to go to the funeral home or at least to someone's house when one of our classmate's close family members passes on. I remember going to visit Rita Yates when both her father and later her mom passed away. She seemed so appreciative, and so did Charlene Fleming when her mom passed a few years ago. A lot of us don't live close by and can't, but for those of us who can, we are appreciated. I know how much I needed my friends when Daddy passed away, and I know I will need them sometime in the future. We send flowers and that is wonderful, but there's nothing like a hug and a caring, familiar face. And of course, we can all remember them in our prayers. If someone in any of our classmate's families passes on, please let me know. Lots of times, I don't hear about it until afterwards, but I do want to let them know in some way that we do care. Just sharing my thoughts.....

Good Point, Janice

by Kay Hale

You seem to have a special compassion for the grieving; this is an important calling. It is great to be there for people during their crisis periods. We all need to be on the look out for ways we can help.

Everyone needs to post when we learn of the needs of another. That way those who are able to come along side can schedule an opportunity.

Also, promptly posting the needs of other classmates will give others a chance to support them by praying, sending cards, phone calls, etc.

I will try to do better in the future.

Kaye Buck Speaks Her Piece Peace

by Charles Lee

Go get'em....and a Snowball Reunion is a great idea.

While we are on the subject what the HAY happened to the chorus line picture of 2005????

Guess I'll have to stop asking that question soon. But then the question becomes..........did anyone take any pictures at the CHS 70 reunion???? OR were they ALL that bad????

Anyway Ms. Kaye you are an inspirational writer, please keep it up.

Today was a great day on the boat, now it's 1am and I can't sleep.

Nytol.
