Gingerbread House Contest

Entries due Sat. Dec. 5th; Open Dec. 10th - Dec. 13th

Location: Woman's Club of St. Michaels, St. Mary's Square

2009 marks the third year for the annual Gingerbread House Contest during Christmas in St. Michaels.

The contest is open to all and entries are divided into four categories: Professional (chefs and caterers), Adult, Young Adult (13-18) and Children (under 12). Cash prizes for one winner in each category include $500 each for the Professional and Adult categories, donated by an anonymous donor, $150 for Young Adults and $100 for Children, generously contributed by Chesapeake Bay Outfitters.

Houses remain on public display from Thursday, December 10th through Sunday December 13th at the Woman's Club on St. Mary's Square. No admission is charged. Many of the creations are available for sale and make fabulous tabletop centerpieces or a welcome addition to your front hall for the holidays. Proceeds from the sale of these houses go to Christmas in St. Michaels to support our selected beneficiaries.

Learn to be a winner...

A demonstration will be held on Monday, November 9th at 2:00p.m.at that Parish Hall at Christ Church on Willow Street in St. Michaels. Jenn Schmidt, pastry chef at 208 Talbot, will lead the session, demonstrating how to bake, ice and decorate gingerbread houses. She will provide ideas for using creative materials to make your own entry truly unique. All are welcome.
Play by the rules...

* Participants must send their entry forms by November 21st, 2009. (see form to download below)
* House walls and roof must be made of gingerbread. No graham crackers or cookies.
* All decorations on houses must be edible. Foil, cellophane or plastic wrapped candies must be free from their wrapper.
* Lights may NOT be used on entries.
* Completed houses must be secured to a base no larger than 18" x 18". The base must be completely covered with some edible substance (i.e. icing).
* Entries must be delivered on Saturday, Dec. 5th between 11a.m. and 4p.m. to the Woman's Club on St. Mary's Square.
* Houses will be judged on design and general overall appearance. Judging will be held on Sunday, December 6th.
* A "Viewer's Choice Award" will be made in each category based on ballots submitted by those visiting the display and casting a ballot. Each winning entry will receive a ribbon and a certificate.
* Christmas in St. Michaels requests entrants to donate their houses to be sold with proceeds going to support our beneficiaries: Character Counts at St. Michaels and Tilghman Schools, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Critchlow-Adkins Children's Center-St. Michaels site, St. Michaels Food Pantry, St. Michaels Community Center, Town of St. Michaels Restoration of Muskrat Park.
* All entries must indicate on the entry form whether they are a donations.

Checks and ribbons will be awarded to the winners on Sunday, December 13th at 1:00pm. One cash prize will be awarded in each category: $500 for the Professional and Adult winners; $150 for the Young Adult winner; $100 for the Children Under 12 winner.
