Plywood wrapped with freezer paper or painted white; Kitchen cutting board wrapped in freezer paper; Cardboard wrapped in freezer paper; 1" thick styrofoam.
The base of your house should be atleast 6 inches larger all around the base dimensions of your house so you will have room for landscaping (grass, fences, trees, etc).
For my kids and myself, decorating the yard is the best part of decorating a Gingerbread house.
