Tried and tested? Any advice? I would be grateful.

Jan 2009 I noticed slight hair loss. Initiallly I was diagnosed with Diffuse Alopecia Areata as my scalp itched so badly, and I was told to "baton down the hatches and live half day to half day"!
So many nights I went to bed expecting to get up bald and the consequences were disastrous. Finally another dermatologist diagnosed me with telogen effluvium which was brought on by an increase in my thyroid medication.
This hair loss has continued but to a lesser extent and is gradually resolving ( I have lost a huge amount of hair) but the itching is the same. Incidentally I was told last May I might have an allergy to my hair die as well as the telogen effluvium which I have ignored until now,as I had serious concerns re the hair loss and could not face being allergic to my dye as well. I am now starting to come to terms with this is a distinct possibility and is more than likely the PPD as my dye is low ammonia, no peroxide, or vice versa. Incidentally it does have the lowest level PPD. Previous to this I used L'Oreal which I knew my hair did not like on the first permanent colouring. This deteriorated to a nasty burning sensation.
I am currently awaiting for my skin test appointment. I would never use a PPD colour agian but can anyone give me any reassurance that I will be able to cover my 40%+ grey hair? And to what degree can I expect cover? I am only 37 and quite frankly I have had as much as I can take regards hair problems over the last 18 months. Any advice or recommendations on products to try would be gratefully received.
