PPD in combs, capes, cross contamination, who to have cut/color which salon:
I can tell you a few things. I use combs that are lighter in color, they do not have PPD, but I can not speak for every hairdresser. I do know that my clients with allergies have not had any problems with their combs. I can tell you the brand of comb that I use, and you can purchase it if you would like to bring your own in. It is by cricket, and it is a silkcomb. (they are light grey, or cream colored)
Capes, if you are worried about the capes having PPD, then go and purchase a white cape at a beauty supply. if you bring one to a hair dresser, or have one come to your house, they will be happy to use your stuff. (try sally's)
Clips, I use light colored clips, but I recently purchased the ones for breast cancer.
I also use separate products for color, mostly because I am a slob, and would not want to get hair color on a clients clothes, so everything put into the washing machine on hot after it has been used. If I use clips, they are not cutting clips, as they section differently. As far as the sink, I use a towel for each client on their neck, so as to not have any one laying on the sink, and I do clean it between customers, it is only a second for a quick swipe with the towel after each person is leaving the bowl. That said, I work ALONE, and I can not speak for any one else. Is it possible that this is why I am getting such good results with the allergy clients? I am not sure.
I also have strong thoughts in nerves, and that nerves are one of the biggest contributers, so if you don't have a regular person to put you at ease, this is a problem in itself. you may be destined to itch from this alone. I have a check list to do just for my allergy clients! Sometimes, I am on edge a bit, but only to be sure I have checked, and re-checked EVERYTHING, so they are at the most comfortable I can possibly offer. What good is it all if they can't color again?
Try to get some one to come to your house for now. In the mean time, you can begin the search for a salon. this is how I would begin the search, and it might take a long time. I would try one salon every other month, maybe one area near your home at a time. This might make it manageable, and not too insane for people with a daily life. (Ha, like any of us have that...)
SO, what you should be looking for isn't the cheapest place, you should be looking for and independant smaller salon, with only 2 or 3 people. something that is more along a boutique, not cheap. They will be the ones willing to go through all the extra work. (This is how my salon is) Stich with only one person, also don't be afraid to go to a local health food store and ask if they know of any one. Also, ask smaller salons for the manager. This is often the person with the most experience. I am sorry to say that you are not looking for a $20.00 color, but more along the lines of $120.00. Also, don't make an appointment for color! Make an appointment for a consult!!!!!! If you feel funny, DON'T GO BACK! If they have never heard of PPD, and do not want to deal with it, then don't go there. it takes time, energy, research, but please, don't give up. The industry is just begining to open up for the hairdresser, so there is a tiny speck of light....
