Just writing to let you all know that I just did my hair using Surya Henna Cream (mixed dark brown and black) and it's great.
I did a patch behind my ear and all was fine so went ahead and did it and the results are really, really good. My whites and grays are totally covered (I'm like 35- 40% grey), my hair looks totally full and healthy--it also feels wonderful. Until now I've been using Clairol Loving Care, it was good in terms of coverage, color etc., but I wasn't crazy about all the chemicals and I was hoping for a better option that I could use more comfortably. This Surya Henna really is good and I'm happy that there is a company out there at least trying to give us a hair dye that is safer for us to use. I know some of you are worried about azo colors so as with anything I'd patch it first and if you know absolutely that you're allergic to azo colors then this isn't for you because they do use some (not heavy amounts). I had a very bad reaction to the PPD in hair dye and that reaction has made me sensitive to other things but Surya Henna has worked for me and as I mentioned so far it works on all fronts - no reaction of any sort, totally covers grays (Clariol Loving Care did a really good job, this is even better), hair color is great and the hair itself looks and feels richer and healthier. I'll post again to let you know how it holds up...

Thanks dev16 that was another dye I thought of trying before I used Logona. At least now I have an alternative if I get fed up using it.
Many thanks for the info it is so helpful to all of us, let us know how it holds up.

Hows the Surya henna holding up?

Hi dev16, hows the colour going.
I have just bought the dark brown to try. I wondered how long you left the colour on for?
My hair is a mixture of colours, about 15/20 % grey mainly at temples, but a few strand over, originally colour light brown and I still have half head of blonde highlights growing out. It says leave 10 mins on bleached hair, 40 on brown and 60 mins on grey/white. So you see my dilema happy.gif
I have my patch test started. Going to wait 48 hours before I try it, so all help appreciated:)
Thanks Jo

Hi Jo,
The Surya has been great. My hair is healthier, richer, softer, and the color actually lasts longer on the greys than the Clairol Loving Care did.

I'm recommending going with the grey time and leaving on for 60 minutes (reading other's experiences on the web, some people leave it on even longer than that) I have a bit more grey than you, it's grey and darkbrown/black (don't have highlights). What I do is actually start with the grey areas first, then do the rest of my head, then put the cap on and time from that point the 60minutes. A suggestion, but I'm not sure if or how it will work, you could do the brown and grey areas for 45 minutes, take the cap off, add color to the bleached highlight section and put the cap back on for the last 15 minutes (I've done this once before for a touch up, did the greys, then for the last 15 minutes did the ends, it worked well).

Also, when using the surya, you need to really saturate the hair, put a lot on. I was nervous the first couple of times I used it-- worried I'd react even though the patch tests were clear and I felt no burning, itching etc (post-traumatic reaction I guess). But I now know that I don't react and am way more comfortable with it. It's been very safe for me and I hope it is for you as well. There's a huge difference in the condition of my hair and scalp --so much better than any other type of hair dye.

The only thing is you may need to play around a few times re: color and time that you leave it in to get the best overall results. Sometimes my colour is so fantastic with surya, but once the color of the greys wasn't so good. I think this is the case with all PPD-free/temp. hair dyes when it comes to grey and dark hair combo (clairol loving care made the grey bright purple a few times). I have to find a recipe to get greys that are consistently more brown in color. But surya really does cover grey amazingly well.

Anyway, that's the scoop. Good luck-my fingers are crossed! Let us know how it goes,

Thanks for all your help dev16:)
I have used the surya henna dark brown, I started with the greys, and did the blonde bits last and timed for 60 mins. I must say overall the grey cover is very good, this and my brown roots are dark brown:) the blonde ends were, maybe 2 shades lighter.
I have now washed it again 48 hours later and am still losing colour when rinsing ect. So the colour is slightly lighter now, but still very good. I do like the colour may try a different colour next time:) I do have enough left to redo it though.

Let you know how it goes Jo

Hi Jo,
I'm really happy to hear it worked. It does come out some each time you wash it, but I've come to realize that even though you see it "leave" when you shampoo, and it lightens some, it will last longer than you think. I did switch to a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair (aveda) and that seems to prolong it a bit more. I'll also keep you posted.
Wishing you and everyone on here happier hair days,
dev16
