I have just completed a 10 week course on 'cloud watching' with 12 year 8 girls in my school. This forms part of the extension programme where girls opt for a different activity to pursue between 4 and 5 on a Tuesday. Many teachers struggle to come up with ideas but for me teaching them to appreciate clouds was a no-brainer.

I am very keen to introduce more emphasis on sustainability in the school, but it is hard to hit that head on. By getting the girls to appreciate clouds I am hoping to encourage a wider awareness of the world around us.

Anyway the activity was a huge hit and I awarded all the girls certificates as members of our school's cloud watching club at the end.

Next term I am going to invest in a few picnic rugs and set up a lunchtime cloud watching club.

      Any ideas or observations?

      Lou
