It took 87 years for the compromise that was required just to get the Consitution signed to be resolved. Took a lot of white boys dying on battlefields too.
That, sir, is politics in action. We know politics aint pretty now, and I doubt it ever was. As old a story as human beings trying out communal living.
Before you scream hypocrite and Supremecist at such luminaires as Washington and Jefferson, never forget that the tag of White Supremecist is the term used by someone trying to evoke an emotional response. Flame bait, Doc, and you are among friends here.
That opening line was right out of Al Sharpton's 3" X 5" cards.
Another point. The context, education, and environment in which they lived was a handicap to their own enlightenment. It took extremists, the Abolitionists, to act as the social force for change. Extremists were neutralized in the process of the Constitutional convention when compromise was required.
Starting badly, and leaving the door open to unscrew the compromises allowed the right thing to come in time. That took a certain amount of vision, and without Jefferson buying Louisiana and manifest destiny making the Western States even possible, the Congressional showdown the forced the Secession and Civli War would not have happened either. I give them all a lot of credit for avoiding a structure that would not render the corrective action and momentum of moral weight impotent against a flawed compromise.
