Finally got all of the patching done and jumped into a 1 vs. 1 as the undead versus another undead player, and got myself plastered. It only took another three hours or so of patching (not sure exactly how long, since I let one of them download while I went to sleep, then installed it when I woke up) for a grand total of about 5-6 hours' worth of downloading patches sequentially to get it to play.
Is there any sort of easier way to move your troops than by hitting 'm' each time you want them to go to the next spot? That was awfully inconvenient.
As in all Blizzard RTS games, it is a good idea to use the (a)ttack button to move your troops. If you want to specifically move them somewhere without them attacking anything on the way, you can either use the (m)ove command or right click on the map. Right clicking on an enemy will set your men to attack that particular enemy until it (or they) are dead, or you issue them another order. Right clicking on lumber or a gold mine when you have a worker selected will set them to harvest the gold.
There are also many funky interface things that you can do as well. Like, if you are a paladin, use his holy light skill to heal your men by pressing the shortcut key to the spell, then clicking on the damaged units portrait in the console down the bottom. Likewise with any positive buff.
It's always a good idea to learn and memorise all of the shortcut keys to each race. Some are easy (such as the attack and move commands) but some take a small amount of practice. But using a shortcut key takes about 1/10 of the time to issue the order. I kid you not when I say that you will be ten times faster using shortcut keys. And ten times faster is equivalent to around 100 times as effective.
Oh, and as a little bit of war3 specific advice, play as much as you can in 2v2s until you get good. Warcraft 3 has been designed for teamplay and teammates to help you. Which is a bit annoying when your partner doesn't help destroy the enemy army if you are doing a siege tank rush.
In one game I played, I teched straight to siege tanks and rushed with six of them. Having no way of attacking units, my enemies army was preserved (despite me pleading to my partner to help), even though I destroyed all but one or two of his buildings.
But the point being that War3 is easiest when played as a team, because you can see what your partner does (if they are better than you) and because you are less likely to get beaten by cheesey tactics (including the new don't-have-to-fight-for-goblin-merchants bug).
Anyway, hope you find this helpful. Most of it you'll find at good strategy sites in the basics section. If you want to learn more I reccomend marn thunderhorns site (the official one).
