After 51 weeks of planning, the 7th Annual Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta "unofficially" begins a week from tonight! For anyone coming to Wheeling on Thursday, we will be gathering at the Quaker Steak and Lube Restaurant just outside of Wheeling at the Highlands (better known as the shopping center that Cabela's built!). Take Exit 10 off I-70 and follow the road past Cabela's and you will see Quaker Steak on the left. There will be a roped-off area for us to pull in with our boats - you shouldn't have to unhook unless you want to do so. We will be there for approximately 2 hours and then will caravan to our home for the weekend, Wheeling's Heritage Port. Security will be provided in Heritage Port by off-duty members of the Wheeling Police Department beginning at 8:00 PM; security will be provided on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
If you will be driving to Wheeling on Friday, you may come directly to Heritage Port. Registration should be open around 9:00 AM or so, and will be open until about 5:00 PM. Take I-70 to Wheeling and use exit 1A. If you are coming from the west, turn right onto Route 2 South after exiting I-70; if you are coming from the east, turn left onto Route 2 South after exiting I-70. Go approximately 1/2 mile and turn right onto 12th Street. Heritage Port will be directly in front of you, and the registration motor home will be just to the right of Heritage Port. Your boat will be towed into Heritage Port by tractor.
When you register, be prepared with your APBA card and your physical form dated within the past 24 months. If you have not had your physical yet, please let me know ASAP and we will try to make arrangements for you to get one here on Friday. As we did last year, we will have a Basic Medical Information sheet available for you to complete and place in a sealed envelope in your file; this will only be used in case of a medical emergency and will only be opened by appropriate medical personnel. You can pick it up on Sunday afternoon if you'd like; any that are not picked up will be shredded unopened on Monday.
The VIP and Sponsor Dinner will take place at WesBanco Arena, adjacent to Heritage Port, with social hour beginning at 6:00 PM. Two tickets for this dinner (and for Saturday's dinner) are provided to you as part of your registration. We have a few extra tickets available; please let us know as soon as possible if you need one or more.
The driver's meeting will begin promptly at 8:30 AM on Saturday in Heritage Port. Please note that you must be at this driver's meeting if you plan to run on Saturday. The driver's meeting for Sunday will be held following the last heats on SATURDAY, so please be sure to stick around for it. We will also have dinner for you on the patio at WesBanco Arena (or inside if it is raining). The Regatta will be presenting free musical entertainment in Heritage Port beginning at 7:30 PM (we will move into WesBanco Arena in case of rain).
On Sunday evening after the on-the-river events are completed, everyone is invited to TJ's Sports Garden Restaurant across from the Hampton Inn in Wheeling. This has become a Regatta tradition and TJ and his staff are ready to welcome us and listen to all our stories about the weekend. Security will be provided in Heritage Port on Sunday night so don't worry about having to tow your boat out before you go to TJ's.
If you have questions as you drive to Wheeling, please feel free to call me on my cell at 304-650-0185, or Dan on his cell, 304-650-0907. If we don't answer right away, please leave a message so we can call you back. (We will be a little tied up Thursday morning as our son Craig will be having surgery and a bone graft on his wrist to repair a fracture suffered in a soccer game a few months ago.)
Safe travels to Wheeling, everyone! And we still have room for you and your boat, even if you haven't let us know you are coming (although it would help for planning if you could let us know if possible!).
The folks from NNY ( Northern New York) are headed your way. GP-200 Lauterbach Special and A-21 Hot Flash will arrive Friday morning. GP-1001 Dinomytes will be arriving about the same time. Roger is ready to parade the streets of Wheelng as he did in Madison. What no parade? Miss Sapphire N-700 will be in VERY late Friday. Get ready as we have lots of fuel and are ready for some hot laps.
Looking forwarded to visiting with Gorden Jayne and Deb. I know lots of the Canucks are making the long haul. We hope to have a great turnout. Rotten Rob is also on the lookout for flats to tackle.
I had to get a cortisone shot at the doctor's office to tackle a bad head cold, but preporations are almost finished to hit the road about 3:00 AM CDT Thurdsay morning. We will be pulling into Heritage Port Friday morning, The Tijuana Taxi sporting a new seat to try and better contain her driver. Looking forward to many laps with my friends, the Wandering Canucks. Drive careful.

We just loaded 45 gallons of Sunoco 112. Miss Dinomytes has put in new strut bearings and Miss Sapphire has changed the break in oil. We are on the way!
Looking forward to running with Gorden Jayne, Roger and the rest of the fleet.
Carol has Hot Flash A-21 dynoed out and RPM is not a problem for the Buick 215 which is destkoked and sleeved to 2.5 liter. This motor screams. The sound is like nothing else on the course. New Jamie Aauld rudder will make it a handler too. I tested it last weekend and she runs like a dream.
See you all in Wheeling. Deb, Dan and family are as usual putting all forth to make us welcome.
