Falcons 01 & 02 AAA Doomed

The word on the street is several 01 and 02 are leaving for TI, Mission and CYA. After a long year at 01 crushing teams and a lack of development compared to the AAA kids I understand why. One week of parents not getting any sleep, working the phones, plotting, broken promises, back stabing... this is a new pilot for CBS called " Falcon Koolaid "

You mention "lack of development," if true why the open arms by all these stellar AAA programs? Please enlighten me.

Very simply the teams did well but the players in comparison to that of AAA players that were selected did not improve anywhere close to that. Kids that played AAA grew leaps and bounds in development. The AA/AAA teams however individually did not develop. They did have success just not at the highest possible level. There is a big difference when you play AAA. All players have no choice but to develop and can't ride the coat tails of 3 or 4 players. AAA has open arms for those 3 or 4 players. The players that are not selected should be happy for them because now they get to become the AA ball carrier so to speak. The funny thing is that if the 5 through 10 player gets a AAA spot they may pass up the Top 4 player that stays behind. In a nutshell AAA isn't for everybody but don't try to hold kids back so little Johnny doesn't have to carry the ball. Time for your player to step up!

You say it is time to "step up. ". According to MHR, Falcons 01 finished as the #4 ranked AAA team in the country vs. #12, #13, #28 and #38 for the other 4 AAA clubs. That looks more like a step down than a "step up" to me. Maybe you can make sense of that data, might be hard though, but I am sure you will find a way to spin it!

The 2001's were a very good AAA team. I think all that the guy is saying is the real good players on the Falcons team won't be playing 20 games were they beat the other team by 10+ goals. Good luck to them all. They will make the AAA teams they go to better and will be challenged a lot more over the course of a season.

If you dig deeper into MHR's rankings you will see that when the falcons played a league game and beat them by a large differential it inflated their rankings. For example playing against an opponent with a rating of 12 and beating them by 7 goals give the falcons 19 points for that game. However, when playing against a AAA club with a rating of 14 and beating them by 1 gives them 15 points. Therefore, not wanting to take anything away from the Falcons, playing almost half their games against tier II rivals and beating them by large margins artificially increased their rating. I am not saying they not would not have a good season, but playing an entire season vs. AAA caliber teams the likes of CYS, Mission, LC North, might have yielded a different year end ranking.

I think they only played Fury and Mission last year...They were all close games. They lost every time or may have beat the Mission once. They and beat the Fury twice by 3 goals. I saw one Fury game and the Mission games. The Fury was only ranked around 35. As such, the rankings are only a statistical gage with some inherent issues... Falcons were a very good AAA team, but I think some of the kids will benefit from playing AAA hockey all the time. As such, these talented kids will be pushed 90% of the time and not 20% of the time.

After speaking with many parents at the 01 & 02 levels. I have some insight into the problem into this matter. The first one being, what does the parent want for their athlete? Obviously the child has to care about the sport, but the parents have to have a goal in mind when putting their child in sports. If you have a goal of getting your athlete into College or even professionally. If that is the ultimate goal then one needs to continually put that athlete into opportunities that support that goal at all times. What does that mean? It means that the path needs to support the goal. So what is the path? The path must match where the athlete will get visual attention to be seen by the vast majority of people who are selecting these kids for gradual steps for that goal. So there is a ladder of graduation. A good year at Mites will not get you into D1, but a good year at Mites will get you seen by many to advance to a higher level of Squirt. It will also open up doors of opportunity for camps, Select teams, and even AAA teams. This is a path for the highest percentage of success if your goal is the most elite level of play. Pass up those opportunities along the way and the path becomes increasingly more difficult for the ultimate goal. Can the path be found later in a career? Absolutely! It is that much tougher to achieve though. So through my discussions with parents I have seen quite frankly a lack of knowledge in respect to this process. I have seen many families focus on winning or who is the best Mite or Squirt. It's not the correct mindset for that goal. So is it possible for AAA caliber players to be playing AA? Yes all day long! Those families may have financial concerns, their athlete may be good enough but the parents may realize a fault in their child to feel that they just won't make it. They also may not want to be sacrificing those years of dedication to achieve that goal. A lot comes into play. Do AAA programs want all the best players? Yes, but it is unrealistic to think that it will happen. My advice to many families in this age group? Sit down with your family. Decide your goals, surround yourself with people who have the same goals. If the goal is to just have some fun as a family and enjoy the company with other AA players and families? Stay where your at. If you have a dream big situation then attack that path with no regrets as the window of opportunities for this sport is small.

What happened? Are you playing AAA or AA ? What is the plan for the future? Is it true the studs are leaving? What kind of level of competition is csdhl going to offer? Are you playing NIHL ? Please tell us the hockey world in Chicago has stopped. It's all your fault for building these dream teams of 5 players. Either way we wish you and your egos the best.

Remember when you took your kids to the learn to skate program and he could barely stand?

Did you go home and post on a message board that your kid took 2 strides without falling?

Or that Jimmy Smith fell five times, therefore he'll never make it????

Thats how you would sound to colleges and minor hockey coaches if they read your posts here.

I know I have issues. I admit it. I am a little disappointed that the dream team has fallen apart. Now I may have to go back to AA after I supported a club for a year. SB was an okay coach but didn't deliver what he promised. New better kids come along and my kid is on the outside. Such is life. When are the Falcons tryouts as I may just switch teams. Is there team already picked?

I suggest looking into the Barrington program. Something tells me if you son cannot make TI, he has no chance of making the Falcons. That would be like getting cut from JV and then trying out for Varsity.

Hey Reggie D, although your comments to the other guy were funny. It's even funnier how mighty you think the Falcons 01 team will still be.

I think what you should of said is getting cut from JV and trying out for freshman B because with the third liners who still remain you will be lucky to be on a top 5 Central States team!

01 team officially done

May 14 2012, 6:32 AM

Players this weekend have decided that they will pursue the AAA dream. This is great for Illinois hockey and for RT. He personally recruited or developed these players and now is sending them on to a higher level. Although it is unwillingly that he does this he has had a hand in making some of the best 01's in Chicago winners. Let's hope they keep that up at the AAA level. It's expected. Now that its pretty much official any high end 01's that don't get selected or get misplaced should considered RT as the number one option. Let's see if it's the coaching or the recruiting. Best of luck to all at tryouts this week.
