Western Michigan sweeps Mercyhurst
By Karl Henkel/Western Michigan Beat Writer
Western Michigan went on the road and swept Mercyhurst over the weekend, thanks to some strong goaltending from Nick Pisellini, who won CCHA Goalie of the Week honors in the process.
The Broncos edged the Lakers 3-2 Friday night before a 1-0 victory Saturday.
In the opener, after Ian Slater scored first, Ryan Watson scored the winning goal late in the opening period and Dane Walters added a power-play tally 31 seconds into the second period.
That's all Pisellini needed as he stopped 29 shots, including 17 in the second period.
In the second game, Pisellini was even better. He stopped all 28 shots that Mercyhurst fired his direction.
Pisellini's counterpart, Jordan Tibbett, stopped 39 of the 40 shots he faced, with the only blemish occurring early in the third period when Kyle O'Kane scored the game's lone goal.
Pisellini has now won all three of his starts and has only allowed four goals.
Western Michigan (3-1-0) is off to a hot start and travels to Canton, N.Y., to face St. Lawrence this weekend. SLU is 0-2-2 and was swept by Ferris State this past weekend.
