Wins Big Over Colgate
HANOVER, N.H. The No. 18 Dartmouth men's hockey team scored its most goals since Nov. 26, with a 7-3 victory over Colgate on Saturday evening in Thompson Arena. Seven different players scored goals as the Big Green tallied one in the first and three in the second and third period. The victory improves the Dartmouth to 12-6-3, 8-4-2 in the ECAC while the Raiders fall to 3-21-2, 0-12-2.
A pair of scores early and late in the frame had the game tied at 1-1 going into the locker room after the first period. The opening goal for Dartmouth began in the Colgate end as Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) won the faceoff and sent the puck down the ice as the Big Green changed lines. Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) flew over the boards and got a quick shot on goalie Bryan Bessette which was saved out to Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.). Jones gathered the rebound and tallied the goal just :57 seconds into the contest.
The Raiders tied things up late in the frame, with only :16 seconds showing on the clock, as Mike Leidl had been able to get several shots through traffic from the blue line on goalie James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.). His third shot sailed over Mello's lifted hand for the equalizer.
A textbook play by Dartmouth's fourth line gave the Big Green the lead back midway through the second period. Jason Bourgea (South Burlington, Vt.) got the puck on the left side boards, passing down to Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) who waited just to the left of the cage. Lee passed quickly over to Alex Goodship (Blackfalds, Alta.) after Bessette had committed to him, allowing Goodship to stuff the puck into the empty side of the net.
Less then 2:00 later, Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) gave Dartmouth its biggest lead of the night before his linemate Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) added to the total when he lit the lamp for the the Big Green's fourth goal. That score chased Bessette from between the pipes as Alex Evin came on in relief.
The Raiders were able to get one back after the Big Green had a five-minute major called on them allowing Colgate a great chance to get some momentum going. The Raiders were able to take advantage and get one power play goal to cut into the lead as the two headed to the second break of the contest with Dartmouth ahead, 4-2.
In the final period of play, Fleming finally got in on the scoring when he used a shorthanded breakaway to come in alone on Evin, giving Dartmouth a three-goal lead again.
The Raiders used an unassisted strike by Mark Nasca at 10:01 to put one more on the board before Big Green freshman Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) went to work for the home team. Lindblad made several great plays in the waning minutes of the period and was rewarded with two assists as Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jones were recipients of his heads up play.
Dartmouth finished with 33 shots to Colgate's 31 as Mello had 28 saves on the night and is now 10-3-3 on the season. Bessette and Evin combined for 26 saves.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Brown and Yale on Feb. 4 and 5. Game time for both is 7 p.m.
