Merrill Suspended for 12 Games
Oct. 1, 2011
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head ice hockey coach Red Berenson announced Saturday (Oct. 1) that sophomore defenseman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) has been suspended for the first 12 games of the season due to a violation of team rules.
"Jon has an obligation to the team and he did not live up to those responsibilities," said Berenson. "He needs to be accountable to his teammates and this program both on the ice, around campus and in the community."
He posted 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) as a freshman in 2010-11, the fourth-best point total for a freshman defenseman in school history. He was named to the All-U.S. College Hockey Online second team and the Inside College Hockey All-Freshman Team. Merrill received conference recognition, earning All-CCHA second team and CCHA All-Rookie team honors.
Merrill will be eligible to return to the team at Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Nov. 11.

Northeastern suspends Ferriero, Quailer
by Joe Meloni/CHN Staff Writer
BOSTON Northeastern forwards Cody Ferriero and Steve Quailer were suspended by head coach Jim Madigan and will miss Friday's season opener.
Neither player dressed for Sunday afternoon's exhibition against St. Francis Xavier. According to Madigan, the suspensions are holdovers from last season under former NU coach Greg Cronin.
Both players are key to the Huskies' success in 2011-12 after equally difficult campaigns in 2010-11 and the loss of NU's top four scorers from a season ago.
Ferriero failed to perform consistently as a freshman, after landing at Northeastern following his decision to decommit from Boston College. Quailer, meanwhile, had a disappointing season after missing all of 2009-10 recovering from knee surgery.
However, Madigan pointed out that the suspensions are not related to behavior this season, and that both Ferriero and Quailer have behaved well and practiced with the team.
Also, freshman Ludwig Karlsson will miss Northeastern's first two games of the season due to eligibility issues related to the NCAA Clearinghouse. Karlsson played in Sunday's exhibition, an 8-5 loss to St. Francis Xavier, and was a minus-1.
