Standards of emergency care in APP

I am seeking input on issues related to dealing with backcountry emergencies in Algonquin Provincial Park. I coordinate 16 youth canoe treks every July. Our staff is concerned about having the best possible emergency plan while in the backcountry. We currently rely on trained first aid, followed by possible paddle evacuation to the nearest road / park venue for transfer to private car or ambulance. We would use limited cell phone coverage to accelerate pick up time if possible.

Does anyone currently rent / own satellite phones for backcountry treks?
What's the trend - does anyone consider SAT phones a required standard of care for organized youth group treks in APP?

SPOT

June 9 2009, 8:50 AM

Hi Tom,

I have heard that some people do carry the satellite phones, but I think most people go out with a first aid kit and hope for the best. I have started carrying a SPOT device which allows my position to be tracked via satellite / internet. It allows me to push an 'OK' button so those at home will get an e-mail that shows this status message. The main feature, however, is the 911 button (that I have not had to press and hope that I never have to).

In case of a severe emergency which would require more than a 'paddle out plan', once you press the 911 button, the message gets sent to Search and Rescue. As the paperwork that came with the device states, S&R is sent out immediately while operators on the ground will phone the person you stipulate as your contact (in your internet profile) and ask all the pertinent questions (how many in the party, itinerary, names, etc etc etc). Using the SPOT device, they will home in on your location.

My wife and kids got me SPOT for Father's Day because I do solo trips and even the best laid plans fall to ruin. I have never had an issue (knock on wood) but you never know when me and that grumpy rabid bear will both round a corner at the same time.

Anyway, that is just an option other than the satellite phones.

cell phones spotty

June 17 2009, 8:19 PM

Hi,
My only comment would be to remind everyone that the cell phones were intended only to serve right along highway 60, and only some areas of that get reception. You cannot count on using cell phones in an emergency situation.
