Response to Your "Herky" cartoon image

Hi Jeff:
That was so long ago the patterns and drawings are long gone. I don't know who did the original, but at that time (l950-51) (Lordy where has the time gone....)That version of "Herkey" was the only "Herkey". Kinda like a collegiate "Mickey Mouse". In other words, that well known (at the time) cartoon figure was found on cups, sweatshirts, book covers, and so on. I just took that figure of him and painted him with a bass drum mallet in his wing, on the bass drums for the Iowa University Marching Band. I wish I could take credit for originating him, but I can't! I was chosen to do it because of my popular cartooning with the "Frivol" magazine. But if you look closely, you can see he really did look a lot like my style of cartooning. He was gold (the color) and black, no other colors. You can see some of that old influence in my cartoons today, I guess it's like a signature, eh? but since I can work in shades of grey now, it makes it so much easier.

Keep 'tooned, Auntie Dobe R. Mann
