can you help me settle an argument please?(two, actually)

how do you hold a dressage whip correctly?
- on the thickened handle (close to the end) and resting on your upper thigh or
- holding below the thickened handle ("balanced") and
resting on your upper thigh?

and

where should you carry the whip?
- always on the inside or
- it doesn't matter ?

thanks in advance

Where the dressage whip should be

In my opinnion I have always been taught to carry the whip in a balanced position below the thick handle and resting on the upper thigh and always carry it on the inside.

I would carry the whip whichever way was most balanced and can vary depending on the whip. Mostly below the thickened handle.

The whip is meant to enforce the leg, so whichever leg needs enforcing that's where you carry the whip. Normally the inside leg needs more engagement, but a horse may have a particular weak leg or you may ride a movement where you need more engagement from the outside leg.

It all depends!
