how to translate hands to meters?

August 30 2001 at 10:57 AM

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how to translate hands (horse length) into meters. Eg how many meters is a 16 hh horse. And why do I read about horses up until say 15.3 hh and not 15.5 does it go from 15.3 to 16 hands?

As you can probably guess I am from overseas (Europe). I I am very keen to get into horses here. I live and work in Melbourne and I would love to ride or buy a horse to do dressage with. Can anyone recommend a good place not too far from the city to do that? I am interested in hearing about a horse owner looking for an experienced rider or a recommendation for a good agistment place. All ideas are welcome!!

Thanks, Evelien

Hi and welcome to Australia.

Horses are measured in hands, each hand being four inches therefore, 15.1hh, 15.2hh, 15.3hh, 16hh. This is how you talk about the height of the horse. An inch basically is 2.5cm so therefore a 16hh horse would be 160cm or 1.6mtrs.

Hope this helps you with reading the ads for height.

Cheers
Deb

the messuring of a horse goes in inches there are 4 inches to 1 hand thats why a horse goes for 15.3 hands to 16hh so if u have a 16hh horse it is 64inches high. 16 x 4 i am not sure on the trasfer over to meters but there are 3 feet to one meter ther are 12 inches to a foot so working from there i would say there are then 36 inches to a meter so there for a 16hh horse at 64 inches would then be approx 1.62 meters roughly. I hope i have helped you
