It has been so long ago but I was stationed at Camp
McNair, H & S Battery, 1st. Batt, 12th. Marines from
February 1955 to Spring of 1956. We came off Mt.Fuji
that Spring and I believed moved to South Camp. Every-
one that didn't go home went to Okinawa. Was great
duty. Wasn't the name of that R.& R. hotel near Yo****a name the Fuji View Hotel. Great place to spend
the week-end.

I was with H & S Battery, 2nd. Batt, 12th. Marines as a ditty-bopper from Feb 54 until we moved to Okinawa leaving Camp McNair in May 55. Landed near White Beach, Okinawa in Jul 55.

How 'bout dat! Initially, I was in H&S 1/12, got transferred to 3/12 in '55 to go with the 4th Marines to form the "1st Provisional Air/Ground Task Force" at K-Bay in Hawaii. Later designated First Marine Brigade.
I don't really miss the hard-backed GP tents, the pot-bellied oil-burners and mid-watches in the motor pool that didn't have any fences around it - just that 10-foot high berm around it. Also don't miss pulling range guard in the snow during FireExs.

I remember the Fuji View Hotel. Great place to stay at such a cheap price. I also remember Yoshida. I was in H&S Batallion, 12th Marines. I was a radio operator. I moved with the Division to Okinawa to Camp Haig. Remember the tents we had to stay in at McNair during the winter with the oil fed pot bellie stoves? I revisited Yoshida with my wife about 10 years ago on vacation. What memories it brought back. When did you get out of the Corps? I was transfered to 29 Palms and was discharged in late 1957. I moved from California to Virginia in 2000 when I retired.

*I believe the Fuji View Hotel was located on Lake Funatsu, not Lake Yoshida. The town we all called Yoshida was actually named Fuji Yoshida. I was stationed at Camp McNair from August 1953 to November 1954. Service Battery, 2nd Bn. 12th Marines (motor transport dispatcher)

I stayed at a Fuji View Hotel which was on the side of Mt Fuji. It was on Lake Yaminaka. (Not sure of the spelling). I was stationed at South Camp Fuji with the 1st Battalion 3rd Marines B Company in 1955-56.

I was with H&S Battery 4th Battalion at Camp McNair. We got there in April 1955 in the middle of a snowstorm. I was assigned to the Comm Platoon, Wire Section and I can recall spending quite a bit of time laying wire for shoots around the Fuji area.
I was also with the 12th when we moved down to Yokuska for a short time before going over to Okinawa and Camp Hague. We had to scrape several inches of accumulated dried mud off the deck of the quanset hut that was our quarters before we could actually move. Didn't thing it was fun then, still don't.
Sorry, no map of McNair. Just remember that it was on the lower slopes of Fuji, and that it was near a Lake Yamanaka. We hiked around that lake several times, I think it was about fifteen miles.

Joined in Aug of '53, went thru boot camp at MCRD San Diego, Sgt Tiznado was DI.
After Advanced Infantry Training at Pendleton, shipped out on the Telfair. Lotta
great memories of Camp McNair. I was a CW radio operator in H & S... and also
did a month of "special" duty on the regimental fuel dump... 'cause I got caught
on liberty without a liberty card :-\
I would also appreciate a map of the place if any old jarhead has one. I climbed
Fuji on a weekend liberty... breathtaking view from the top... lost my Fuji stick
when I left it with a sibling while I did some hitch-hiking around the U.S. I spent
a few liberties in Yamanaka, but I learned a bit of Japanese, so my laundry "boy",
who lived in Yoshida, ( named Shigemitsu Watanabe, anybody remember him? ) invited
me to spend a lot of liberty week-ends with his family. He was a Warrant Officer
in the Japanese military during WW II, but assured me that he had "fought in China,
never against the Americans."
Shipped out to Munsan-ni in Korea in '54, was CW operator and later Comm Section
Chief.
Any of that ring any bells with anybody? Some names I remember: Jack Alm, Mattei,
Martinez, Kondo, Kalilimoku.

Saw your message. I was there between 1955 - 1956 then moved to Okinawa with the Division. I ran across a retired Marine Col. in the neighborhood where I live in Virginia who was also there after us. He has an areial photograph of Camp McNair. Small world isn't it? I have a lot of snap shots of the camp and the guys in my platoon.
