The air was cooler by the lake than it was at the academy.
Jason sat down on the bank and watched the water ripple as the fish came up to feed on the insects descending on the surface. He smiled remembering times when he and his father used to catch fish using spiders and worms to tempt them. Once, he remembered, he reached down to try and catch one with his hands, and lost his balance falling into the water below. He shuddered remembering the coldness of the water hitting his body, and he struggled to the surface. He must have lost conciousness, as the next thing he knew he was lying in his bed and his father feeding him warm soup.
He closed his eyes, and lay down on the grass, breathing in the dam but fresh air some more.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open, he’d heard something. He bolted up into a siting position and looked around. The sound came again, louder this time. Rustling - was something coming his way? “Who’s there?” he called, getting to his feet. He took a few steps towards the sound. He’d taken maybe five steps before he felt and intense burning sensation sear through his body. He could have sworn he’d heard a female’s voice scream, but then again, it could have been his own scream. The only thing he was aware of was nothing, as darkness took over his body.
