I can only assume you like the role of "bat boy" in Ontario's health care system. 20 years ago, there were a handful of nurse practioners and now there are over 600 and most are funded by the Ontario government because we're PART of the health care system and chiropodists are APART of the Ontario health care system. In spite of the errors (most were unintentional), the Ontario government funds RN(EC)s. Just look at how many DChs are funded by the Ontario government!

Are you also in the business of advising patients with gout to obtain orthotics or is that my assumption error? Well it can't really be an error you can't make a diagnosis of gout so you're treating foot pain with orthotics. Hmmm.... How do you treat stress fractures (when you can't even diagnose them or communicate the diagnosis to the patient)? How do you treat Morton's Neuroma? With orthotics, when surgery works and is fully covered by OHIP? I bet that when a person comes in with diabetic neuropathy due to a suspected case of uncontrolled diabetes miletus, you quickly cast them for orthotics rather than advise them to see their MD or RN(EC) for a simple blood test to determine the blood sugar level -for starters. I saw a patient who I referred to an orthopedic surgeon for bunion surgery and to have her 2nd hammer toes corrected, she saw a chiropodist who casted her for orthotics and said that they would help... they actually made things worse for her feet she had bursitis on her 1st mpj and dors 2 mpj those joints weren't red or sore before she got her orthotics. Did you cast her for orthotics instead of telling her that surgery was the best treatment for her? Then 4 or more months after the surgery she should have considered obtaining the orthotics. She was charged $400 and from what I saw, the chiropodist was clearly more interested in making money off the patient than helping her. Podiatrists are guilty of this also.

Just look to the chiropody triumvirate of Forrest, Finch and Wilson. Just a decade ago, they were busy spinning yarns about how much chiropody was in demand and how successful private practice chiropody is. Where are they today? (Their spinning wheel was going so fast that it burst into flames from all the friction they were causing.) Forrest and Finch are M.I.A. and Peter Wilson spent time in the brig. Just ask Wilson today about how successful chiropody really is... he'll tell you. Look at all the staff helping him... well, there's Peter -the adminstrative assistant, Peter -the office director, Peter -the greeter, Peter -the chiropodist, Peter -the patient appointment reminder, Peter -the janitor and Peter -the security guard. This is at a practice that has been in operation for over a decade and in no way was associated with any other dubious practioners. The payroll for one person looks very good at the end of the week. FYI, I remember asking Anthea Stern, one of the senior people at the TGH chiropody teaching clinic, about private practice chiropody 15 years ago. She said that she heard so many sad stories and how tough it is for the chiropodists in private practice that if and when her job disapppears that despite her then 15+ years of experience in chiropody that she wouldn't venture into private practice chiropody. Sure enough her well paying job disappeared and she resigned as a chiropodist with cocoo.

Yes MDs, RNs and RN(EC)s make errors (in judgement, treatment and some are avoidable some are intentional/unintentional) and they are disciplined, the record is on the respective websites. Despite this, they're funded by the Ontario government because they're the real players in the health care delivery system. Whereas chiropodists are the "batboys" they wear the uniforms, handle the equipment, speak the lingo and keep passing the bats to the real players in the Ontario health care system.
