5h 'Lochiel's' (Service) battalion was formed Inverness 1st Sept 1914. During the winter of 1914 - 15 Camerons trained at Aldershot, Alresford and Bordon.5th camerons moved to France May 10th, 1915.
Your relative must have gone as replacement for casualties, to the Somme battlefields.During the summer of 1916, 5th Camerons were brought up to strength after losing some 446 casualties in the attacks on Longueval, Delville wood and waterlot farm. Holding positions on Vimy Ridge. In October the 9th Scottish Division returned to the Somme and 5th Camerons took part in the attacks on The Butte de Warlencourt in the most muddy and difficult of conditions.
The "Butte" was finally captured in February 1917.
