I am looking for any visual images - photos - postcards - first-hand diaries, descriptions, battle accounts - press cuttings etc - trench maps - relating specifically to the 1st battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, during the period of the battle of the Somme, July-December 1916.
My great-uncle, Pte. James Oliver Barron S/23580, enlisted in Edinburgh in December 1915 and served with the 1st Battalion during the Somme. He seems to have survived the worst of the battalion's battles in July and September 1916 (High Wood). He died of wounds on December 23rd 1916 and is buried at Dernancourt Military Cemetery Extension, near Albert. At the time of his death and funeral (which is mentioned in the Regimental History) he is recorded as serving with "A" Company. I visited his grave for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it has made me want to discover more about my great uncle and his brief life as a private in the 1st Cameron Highlandersand his time on the Somme,1915-16.
I have all of the main sources and accounts of the Somme and some relating directly to the 1st Cameron Highlanders, such as John Jackson's "Private 12768 - Memoir of a Tommy", who interestingly must have served in very close proximity to my great uncle when attached to A Company.
I hope shortly to visit the Regimental Museum & Archives at Fort George to review the Battalion records for this period, the War Diary, the 79th News, and the Craig-Brown Archive etc.
I would also be very interested to hear from others whose ancestors / relatives also served with the 1st Battalion in this period and to have details of any family photos, Somme mementoes etc.
