Response to F-100A short tail question

I am pretty sure that the 479th TFW was the only combat unit to fly the short tailed Hun. A few were also operated by the Air Warfare Center at Nellis, AFB and by the Air Developement Center at Wright-Patt. After George Welch's death in a short tailed F-100A the remaining aircraft were retrofitted with the taller tail.

Originally the F-100A was not equipped to carry the AIM-9 Sidewinder, that changing as they went into Air Guard service. The addition of the AIM-9 capability along with the F-100D tail was part of what is sometimes called the F-100A Rehab. That was a modification carried out on some of the F-100As operated by the Nationalist Chinese (one source states that all but four airframes were modified). Those modified aircraft could also fire the AGM-12 Bullpup and a tail hook was added as on USAF F-100s. The Chinese also received a good number of F-100Fs and four RF-100As.

Huns of all variants are cool!
