Actually, the Esci (also released by AMT) Scooter has the best cross-section.

Response to 1/72 A-4 Skyhawks

I measured a real A-4 near my home. Esci is right on; Fujimi is way too wide (and looks too chunky, to me), and Italeri is slightly too thin. The best looking 1/72 A-4 in my collection is a combo: I used the Esci kit with the Italeri canopy and slats (cut from the Italeri wing). The Esci cockpit is too narrow---the seat as released is about a scale 9 inches wide. I cut the cockpit piece in two lengthwise, then used chunks of Evergreen plastic to make a new wider seat bottom and back, then glued it all back together. Strangely, the widened cockpit fits the fuselage perfectly---the kit cockpit leaves gaps between the consoles and the sidewall. I used sheet plastic to drop the flaps.
Look for AMT A-4s on Ebay; they tend to go for less, and it's the same plastic.
