Response to This curmudgeon's fairly used to "groundings"......

When we lost F-111A 67-049 on the Nellis range in Dec '69 (wing fell off), all of us at Nellis felt it because we were grounded for six months. Besides losing a great crew, we lost a six months of CAT III testing. But perhaps the worst part is that all of the lower enlisted ranks had to go on semi-permanent, yard clean-up duty. We cleaned Lake Mead base (where the US Navy kept their "special weapons"), mowed base housing, painted rocks (blue & white for 428TFS), planted cactus (that we appropriated from the desert), cleaned the ditch between the hangars and the flightline, and, perhaps most importantly, maintained the general's golf course. Yes, the base looked great after six months of grounding.

Oh, BTW, in order to maintain flight proficiency, Nellis acquired the largest fleet of T-33's that I've ever seen. The Comm shop was very busy with that vacuum tube technology, but us INS/TFR guys just kept on pulling weeds!
