I have to say I was completely unimpressed with Flowquil blacks

Actually I'm not impressed with any blacks of any manufacturer for a "black" model. The key is to add red, lots of it. I use Model master and I mix British Crimson with flat black and that creates a very nice "scaled" black.

Now when it is mixed it will look like really dark chocolate, it might even look that way when initially shot on the model. If shot extremely thin it'll give a purple hue but just go over it with a few more light coats and it will even out. Once painted it won't look quite right but once you shoot a clear coat to apply decals over then shoot a flat coat to flat the model out the result is a very nice "scale" black that is far better than anything that comes straight out of the bottle. It's one of those things in which you have to trust the process to the end.

A fellow modeler in my IPMS chapter followed what I just explained and built a very nice F-117. He experienced the same things I just described but in the end it really looked good. Here are some examples of my work.
